Jeep wont start....

OK, Im pretty sure its the ignition switch but I had to come to work so I didnt get to play around to much with it, heres what I have...

2000 Wrangler 4cyl auto.  Turned the key to start and I heard a click and the dash lights turned off and gages went to 0.  Battery reads 12.55V and I know its good.  Put the key back in and I could rock the key back and forth in the ON position and watch the gage lights kinda come on and get brighter or dimmer depending on where the key was at.  Fuel gage would start climing and drop off as well.  No computer of fuse in the world will care where in the ON position my key happens to be, only the switch so....

Since I dont have my Jeep here to try and troubleshoot some more, anyone know what to keep an eye out for?

I have heard that theres a mechanical linkage from the key cylinder to a switch lower in the dash and maybe the pins are breaking etc...  Im just trying to find out what I should look for at 6AM when I get home so I can tell the wife what parts to bring home during here luch hour.  Even better, Can I manually bypass this crap long enough to drive and get my own parts if its the key cylinder?  Any info would be great!

Thanks,
EJ

Well, seems the battery wasnt fully shorted when I tested it so it looked OK under load but turning on the ol High beams finished her off in about 3 minutes.  Electrons do funny stuff every now and again.

Yep, sounds like a direct short in the battery which would make it look good until it is under load ...
