Exhaust suggestions please!
« on: July 17, 2006, 01:38:40 PM »
I've come to find that my catalytic converter is shot.  So I'm pondering if it's time for a complete exhaust upgrade.  I'm considering from the head pipe to the tail pipe if it sounds good.  Let me know your thoughts and opinions on changing one or all components, upgrades, worthwhile changes, power increases, all the pros and cons.  OR of course should I just change the CAT.  I got a quote of $170 installed locally, not bad!

probably just want to do a search on 4Banger under exhaust, cat-back, etc.  I think I asked the same question as you at one time, then realized there are about 10 or 20 "new topics" on this forum dealing with that question. You should check them out, 'cause they get everybody's opinion in there rather than those of just one or two guys. :)

IMHO, Stainless steel systems are good and tend to last, just they're expensive, so don't bash them.  Borla, Banks are stainless and sound good.

Hey Chris...  Thanks for those words...

I've been away for a while and haven't had a chance to respond but your right on.  Grim...  Take a moment and try that search.  This certainly is a topic that's been touched on more than once. ;)

Imagine that your sitting at a camp fire OR maybe a car/truck show OR maybe even a Jeep rally. You ask a question of those around you.  A question related to the topic or forum of discussion.  Your question is answered with the suggestion that you go look it up on line?? Is the point we've arrived at in this forum?

I mean isn't this the place of asking and answering. The place to open discussion for new ideas or suggestions to spring from.

Example:
So I could sitting across from one of you at a rally at the Rubicon, maybe even passing a beer to you.  I ask a question and you suggestion is to go look it up on line!!!

Why is this any different?

We can't possibly be this lazy?  I mean Jeeps have been around for decades and every topic however simple or complicated has been asked about or discussed a multitude of times.

You see the assumption is that I didn't do a search. I did a search. What I was looking for was any NEW suggestions or comments.  I mean surely a topic will be discussed beyond a particular thread.  Afterall, new members sign up on the forum with new experiences, new suggestions, some trial and error scars, and so on month. How do you gain their experience withou covering some of the same topics over again?

So if all we did is look up what has been already said, there will be no new ideas on the forum!!!

Me - "Hello guys, what do you think of doing this?? or how about that? Or have you tried this??

You - "Hey man go do a "search" dude. We've talked about that...where were you?"

Me - "Thanks, I'm glad I joined. Yeah!"

I've seen this attitude more and more on this forum.  Its like people go to the effort of reading the tread, they may even know the answer, but elect tell someone to do a search instead of just answering the question.  I mean I could see if this was like a fast paced "no time to answer" high pressure environment, but c'mon, what are you going to do after logging off?

Then I've got this whole "Thank you for those words" person. What's this all about? It sounds so serious.  Prior to this were you reading my thread shaking your head in absolute disgust?

Oh yes, THANK YOU!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I don't know what would have happened had you not gotten to me in time.  God forbid I ask ANOTHER question which has already been asked.

Anyway I'm going to work on asking a really original question.  I may not be interested in the answer and it may be a ridiculous question, but I'll come up with something!

Then we discuss the topic, commit the thread to the archives, and it if it ever comes up again, we'll suggest to the member that they use the "search" function.

WE HAVE NOW COME FULL CIRCLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you asked for NEW suggestions in your original post, or around the hypothetical campfire, you might have more people respond here with "NEW suggestions" over and above the innumerable responses found in a search of this site.  It does pay to watch your wording when you are communicating with, well, "words."  :|

But, hey, you do have a good point about the whole informal Jeep/ beer/campfire deal.  That's a good friendly attitude to have even on a site like this one. And, if you buy Jeffy a beer, he'll tell you anything you want to know about Jeep exhausts -- SMC, too

Agreed...  Sorry to have come across as an a$$...

I try to at least see that a post just doesn't get forgotten in the scheme of the boards...  I guess I wanted to acknowledge that your post was seen and not forgotten.  When I read it, I thought the same thing that Chris said, and posted just that.  It wasn't the correct presentation and again, I'll apologize for that.

Campfire analogies aside...  How do you tell a guy to 'look somewhere else', when you are all sitting around shootin' the shit?  It's a completely different scenario.  But if you have been just BS'ing with your group about a subject, talking 20 minutes or more about it, and then someone comes walking over and asks the same question, everyone just spent 20 minutes just talking about...  Do you think they'll get a hard time back??  I hope that that's taken all in fun, here on the boards it's a little more difficult to be 'cute'.

But don’t take that as mean either…  it’s not intended that way.  You made a very valid post and certainly let us (as a group) know proper etiquette to respond to posts that are sometimes asked over and over again.

Stick around…   I’ve always said, if I stay here long enough I’m bound to piss someone off.
