I HAVE A 97 TJ WITH 4:88 GEARS AND 35 INCH BOGGERS. 4 CYLINDER ISNT TOO POWERFUL OF COURSE BUTG IVE HAD THE TRANNY REBUILT TWICE ALREADY. ONCE WAS NEGLECT BUT THE SECOND WAS A MYSTERY ON WAY IT FAILED. ITS HAD MAYBE 20 MILES ON IT AND NOW ITS SLIPPING BEFORE ITLL ENGAGE FIRST GEAR. IS THIS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS TRANNY OR JUST A CRAPPY REBUILD. WANTED SUM INFO BEFORE I STARTED TROUBLESHOOTING IT AND WANTED TO KNOW IF SUM1 ELSE HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM

I have an 97 with an automotic and I have had it rebuilt.  I also run 4.88's but with 33's.  It has been 10,000 miles with few problems.  These trannys do tend to leak fluid and this could be causing the slip.  I have had to tighten the bolts on the pan twice, it was very noticible (the slip as well as the leak).  If your fluid is good (also make sure that they put the right weight tranny fluid) then I would take it back.  If the guy is lagit he should fix it for free!!!

I had a hell of a time getting mine to seal also. had to retourque 3 times. When I got on the highway after the fluid/filter change it was seeping out and a few drops would get blown on to the exhaust. Smells kinda like lit fireworks.  It 's really touchy about the fluid level. 1/2 quart low and it let's me know.
