Header installed! 86 TBI
« on: November 09, 2006, 08:01:55 AM »
ok so 3 weeks ago the rear main seal blew out on my 86 cherokee and to top it off the exhaust manifold was cracked BAD.
so i figure what a better time to yank the engine and install a header.
now they do not make a header for my 86 2.5 cherokee so i purchased the pacestter for a 92 wrangler.
bolts right on but there is no provision for the EGR. no problem unhooked the vacum line on the EGR and that cured that. sure if you wanted to you could weld up a fitting to hook it up thought.
power steering bracket needed cut down a bit to clear the header.
as for the down pipe it bolts on but I had to lengthen the end of it to bolt up to my stock cat flange.* only neede when installing header on a cherokee*
only problem to report is that my front drive shaft hits the header flange from time to time and makes a clank, could probly be fixed with some grinding or on a lifted jeep.
as for the power....WOW my jeep goes up hills with ease now that befor it strugled. i even find myself upshifting on some hills now
it did lose some of the bottom end grunt it had but more than makes up for it in the midrange and top end.
i do have another problem to report.. wheel spin!  before i could dump it and it went, now if the roads a little slick it just spins the rear wheel even into second gear! need a locker now or bigger tires.
I highly recomend a header to any 2.5 jeep owner.

OH yah power steering.
my cherokee has it also. it was no problem all i had to do was cut the PS bracket enough to clear the header, thats it. and no welding needed.

I put a Borla Header on my 93 XJ that was for a 93 YJ but fortunately, I did not have to modify a thing........went in like stock.  The only issue I ran into was having to reroute the exhaust pipe a little bit going to the cat.  Oh yeah, power steering here too. :D  Is that cause mine is EFI not TBI?
