so i am working on my jeep today and was/ am taking off the plate that covers the trany in the body and the  shifter for the tcase came of :evil:.

so my question is how is that clamp square thing so posed to connect the main shifter lever to the one that comes out of the tcase. and my second question is how do you get the knobs off the shiofters.. i can see on the bottom of them there is a flat spot on the round metal washer type thing but i cant get the knob to turn.

please help.. i need to get my jeep back together before i have to goto work this afternoon. :bow:

The shifter halves are held in place with a rubber bushing and clip.  I've seen they are two-piece but I've never been able to get the two apart.

As for the knobs, loosen the jam nut (the washer looking thingy with the two flat sides) and the knob will unscrew easily.

ok i figured out how to get the knobs . but the t case shifter is very loose on the shifter coming out of the t-case. how can i make this tighter so it doesn't fall off again and so i can actually shift into 4low without feeling like im going to brake something.

The linkage is underneath the Jeep. Mine took a 1/2" or 14 mm wrench.

My transfer case shifter base is screwed down with tiny sheet metal screws. When I stripped one I said "sheet". Anyway, there is a cross pattern of putting my plate back on the body there. You cannot screw one side in all the way , then start a new one in on the other side. They all have to be put in loosely, prior to screwing them in all the way, kind of like putting on cylinder head bolts, but with more difficulty refering to stripped threads and screws.

Is it the linkage, or the shifter? That is what I am concerned about. My shifter goes to a bell housing deal that sits in the brace that bolts to the body. It just screws in the way they did it at the factory. Remember that it is not always easy to shift into 4 wheel drive low without the vehicle in motion too. Alot of times I have to be rolling 2-3 mph for it to go into gear.

 I saw 2 guys garage this morn doing the sema gig. That dude spun his rock crawler around using the two front tires only. That would be cool to get the vaccum disconnect deal I guess,if that's what it was. He just unlocked the rear, then locked the front and spun around. It was cool.

this has a pic of the t case shifter.. and my problem is were coming from the top the shifter goes square and goes over the lower part.. the square part is very loose fit and making a lot of slop in the shifting possess... i don't what what screws you are talking about all i could see was stupid metal things..

im kinda pissed of right now cuz i have a head ache and i have to read 1900 pages in a book by Tuesday and the pages are bo-yah! huge.

You'll need a new rubber bushing and metal insert from the dealer to assemble it tightly again.  Never seen a loose one before, congratulations :shock:

:bow:  :bow:  :bow: .. that sounds like it would work.. i don't think i even have a rubber thing left in there.. but i think ill try jerry ringing it myself first before i do paying big bucks at the dealer for something that sound only cost half the price..

You might be surprised, some small things are often fairly inexpensive from the stearlership.  Yes, you need the rubber insert for the two pieces to lock together.
