Turbo Oil return Question
« on: December 10, 2006, 05:06:42 PM »
Ok well i just got a manual to turbo my jeep, and it says you have to return the oil that is sent into the turbo back into the system, you can do this 2 ways, one is through the valve cover, crank vent, or back to the oil pan, but it has to be above the fill level, where in the oil pan is it above the fill line? i would like to go this route because it is more efficent, because going from the turbo to the valve cover would create a little of a uphill, and that cannot happen because there is no pressure pushing the oil. can someone help me with thie fill level of the oil pan please.

also one other question, if i do this turbo kit im looking to get a adjustable MAP sensor from turbo city, where would this mount seeing as i have a 1997 and the map sensor is on the Throttle body?

thanks john

You definately can't use the valvecover for an oil return line unless you mounted your turbo above your hood. Just mount the oil return as high as you can on the oil pan, or tap into the block. Just make sure the return line is big enough and doesnt have any kinks (as always running downhill towards the pan)

Can't help you with the adjustable map sensor, i'm running megasquirt engine management. Which is what you should do.

So i can tap into the oil pan, but it has to be as high as possible on the pan, or the block where on the block could i tap into it

what megasquirt system are you running, where can i find it, and is it expense, hard or easy to use

thanks john

I think your getting in over your head. who/what are you going to be using to tune your turbo set-up? Just bolting on a turbo and not knowing what you are doing is a good way to break things.

You can tap the bottom of the block (or anywhere except the water jacket), i recommend the oil pan as thats the easiest though.

I know how to put the set up together, and i know how it all works, i just need something to tune it all for me, i realize that i need to mount the turbo where my A/C should be,and i need to weld up a pipe from the header downpipe to the turbo, then a pipe from the turbo exhaust, to the rest of my system, then i need to run piping from my turbo outlet to an intercooler, which i could mount either infront of my radiator or behind i havent checked it out just yet, then i would run intercooler piping from my intercooler to the Throttle body, including a blow off valve, look the point is i know how it works, and how im gonna put it together, im lookin for some advice on how to tune it, ive heard it being tuned by using an adjustable MAP sensor, and ive heard of using programs such as Megasquirt and other Piggyback stystems, im just looking for some advice as far as the tuning goes.

i know that you are taking on your own turbo set up, and have some more knowledge than me, but i would like some advice

thanks john

I recommended megasquirt. i wouldn't use an adjustable map, which is why i havn't givin you any advice on using one. And plumbing a set-up is easy, its the tuning part that i don't think you are ready for. An FMU, adjustable map, and msd ignition box to retard timing is what i've seen people say they use.

STS makes a pump just for that oil flow problem, they use it in their kits where they mount the turbos under the car back by the mufflers.  should fit your needs quite nicely, would let you run the oil into the valve cover, and keep you from having to tap into the block/pan

I'd rather take the time to pull the oil pan and tap it then buy a pump, wire it up, and tap the valvecover. Thats just me though.
