Topic: Wierd Overheating problem?

So, I"m on the highway, running close to 70, and I feel some hiccuping, maybe once or twice, so, I took note of it, and nothing seemed to be wrong so I carried on. Pulling off the off ramp, as I'm downshifting, I push it into neutral and it dies. I'm rolling, trying to start it, and nothing. I open it up, look around for bad stuff, nothing. Radiator is full, oil's full. I can't think of anything that would make it not start. So, I wait for about ten minutes, and try to start it again, starts right up, then sputters out and dies. I wait it out for a good while longer, starts right up and drives away. The next stop light, it tries to die again, and I have to keep it revving, so I pulled into a gas station. After thirty minutes there, I start it up, and have been driving it ever since with no issue. It's been back on the highway, same distance, at 60mph today, no problems. Apparently, it got "too hot" and couldn't idle. Wtf?

I agree, could be almost anything. But usually when it's electrical, it doesn't come and go. At least that's my experience. I would start with checking the fuel system. Did you just fill up with fuel? Could be you got some water in the fuel system, specially if you happened to be filling up at the same time as fuel was being dumped into the station's tanks ... water will settle at the bottom of the tanks until stirred up. Could be a vapor lock problem, sometimes a fuel pump will get weak right before it goes out.

I'm leaning toward maybe vapor lock? I'm not really sure at this point, but I did get it to happen again, I have to be going up near 70mph for about 20-30 mins. to get it to occur. If I hang around 60mph, no problems.

I went on a long trip, the rpm's were running 32-3500 for hundreds of miles in freezing weather (65-70 mph in 4th and sometimes fifth). I stopped on the side of the road for sightseeing , with snow on the ground in the middle of nowhere and the Jeep died. It took several cranks of the motor , but after 2 minutes it started again. I think jeeps dislike high rpm's for long trips, and that may be why Jeep switched to a 6 speed tranny, but I have yet to drive in the new six speed.

My old 94YJ had a mysterious coolant leak that took over a year to find. It ended up being the small freeze plugs in the head under the manifold were rotted through and dripping onto the exhaust. It was a slow leak, and the water immediatly evaporated, so it was impossible to spot. I just noticed the corrosion that was forming one day and let it run while I watched it. Ended up just getting a replacement head from autozone for $300 after core charge.
