Auto Transmission Fluid
« on: May 05, 2007, 11:35:12 PM »
This might sound stupid, the haynes manual says to use ATF+4 but many other sources (including the local auto parts stores) say to use Dexron III.  Some of the sites that I have read said that it is ok to top off the fluid with +4 if needed.  I used the rubber gasket the came with the filter (like a moron) and I am about to replace it with RTV (like ya'll told me to) because it leaks worse than the cork.  Its a 97 TJ and I was just curious what every one else used.

I tend to use whatever Dextron is available. I don't think there really isn't much of a difference between 2 to 3, 3 to 4, etc. I'd also suggest to add some Type F (small amount) to the fluid also. Its an inhibitor to the clutch discs.

Biggest thing with a seal is the flatness of the surface. Make sure its clean and smooth. If you do go with RTV, put enough to squeeze when torqueing the bolts. Let it get dry some before adding fluid.  You can always make your own gasket using a cereal box.

Yah, I slept at Holiday Express last night.....  :weee:

Thanks.  Thats what I thought but you never know.  I did use RTV and also waited a day before filling it.  So far no leaks, this is the first time it has not leaked.

Dexron is not recommended in our transmissions.  ATF+3 or ATF+4 is what is recommended.  The RTV is definitely the way to go.
