I had a similar problem, but happened only when the weather was hot; in my case it was the fuel pump going out.  Yours sounds a little different, though...

If you are seeing a check engine light then your solution should be as easy as checking the diagnostic codes. Is it a YJ? If so, you can check the codes simply by turning the key to the on position 3 times in a row. Leave it in the on position the third time and count the pulses of the light.

flash, flash, flash.........flash flash flash flash........

For example would be a code 34. Check it out and let us know what you find.

I have the same problem with my 01 TJ.  i also have a P0170 OBD II code.  which points to the O2 sensor. i changed the upstream sensor and it fixed it for about 3 months, then back again!  i took it to a local shop and they said it was both sensors.  changed them approx 3 months later its back again!!!!  i'm now trying to figure out what is killing my O2 sensors.  i changed my tps, no joy. i'm going to try to clean the iac next. then ???
hope this helps. if there are any other suggestions would be great!!!!

Thanks

It is possible that your fuel pump is dying on you...  But since that is expensive, check all other possibilities first.

Crank position sensor? It all won't work (right) without that particular sensor... It's a common headache on jeeps.

I forgot to add that the idle will go from normal to about 15-1800 until i come to a complete stop, then it drops back to normal.  the other thing i noticed is that it seems heat related as it only happens when my water temp gets up to about 208-210 which from what ive researched is about normal.   i also checksed for codes in the odometer by pressing and holding the trip button, then turning key to on position without starting it.  i get a sequence of 8's, then a 5 of 2.0, then the word bus or number 605 its hard to decipher which next to it a 60 then a 68 then it flashes panel open then does the gauge checks.

I've got the exact same problem as well. Now that its getting warmer here its getting worse...cuts out and backfires. I can jam the throttle to the floor and it will clear it up but at just cruising speeds it cuts out again until i jam the throttle..then it goes away. I've also noticed that sometimes when i come to a stop my oil pressure drops to 0 and comes back up. I check the oil level and its fine...motor runs great when not doing this crap...any ideas?

Mine was similar in that it got worse the hotter the weather was.  But it would not clear up with the full throttle, and never had an issue with the oil pressure.  As others have said, start by checking all the sensors (TPS, IAS, etc.), then check fuel pressure (if the pump is giving up, it is possible that it will read fine on Neutral, but not be up to par when at speed under load, as mine was), then check the electrical part (ignition).

I changed the crankshaft position sensor today and made it about 3 miles further down the road and started acting up again same as before. i'll be pulling the throttle body this weekend to give it a good cleaning and then check the fuel pump.

thanks

Keep us informed of your progress. I pulled the plugs and replaced the wires. Im going after the tps and ias today. I will do the fuel pump after that but im gonna run the gas down cause it has 3/4 tank.
