Noobie needs some advice.....
« on: February 08, 2008, 06:41:46 PM »
Hello all.  I am new to this site, and new to the jeep family.  I have been reading a lot of the posts on here and first let me that you all for taking the time to post.  I am slightly mechanically inclined, but also eager to learn more.  I have an 87 YJ that I got a couple of weeks ago, and it has the 2.5 TBI.  A couple of questions.  I have an oil leak coming from my oil fill cap.  I bought a new cap just in case that was it, but didn't help.  Also put a new PCV and a new generic breather canister from auto zone (the old breather was full of oil).  None of that worked and I still have the leak.  What would cause this extra pressure in the valve cover to make it spill out of my oil fill cap?  Also, when I start the jeep up, it blows black soot all over my garage floor.  It does seem to run rich (extreme exhaust fumes), so I changed the O2 sensor, and new plugs, cap and rotor, wires, and cleaned the coil up real good.  It runs a little better, but still runs rich which I guess is causing the carbon build up in the exhaust??  I thought for sure the CAT was clogged, but when I climbed under the other night, no CAT, straight pipe to the muffler (which I'll also change, but want to get the air/fuel mixture right first).  Any ideas here?  Any help is appreciated.

You are experiencing blow-by. Most likely your piston rings are worn, causing compression to be lost into the crankcase. This whips up oil into places like the air filter, oil fill cap, breathers, and even right out of the dipstick tube. As far as it running rich, it could be just burning oil, or you may have lost so much compression that the combustion process is no longer very efficient.

The long and short of it: You probably need a new engine.

Rob, thanks for the reply.  Not necessarily what I wanted to hear, but I appreciate it nonetheless.  Since i'm definetely a novice, I'll go searching for an identical motor to try my hand at a swap.  Any recommendations as far as who/where to go to order a replacement 2.5?  I've done some google searches, and it seems like there are a lot of folks out there that have these engines available.

Thanks again.

I like the color and the Jeep! My only advice on buying a used engine is try to get it from someone reputable. Most old TBI 2.5's have a million miles on them and are worn out just like yours.

No where close to Oregon, but thanks.  I actually live in Butler PA, where the Jeep was born!!!  I did find a rebuilt 2.5, bored 60 over.  Completely rebuilt and new everything for 800$ I wish I had the knowledge required to do a V8 Swap, but I think I can handle a 1 for 1 swap.  Did it once on a Ranger 3.0. Wish I would have done the 302 there though....  Plus, for now, I like the economics of the 4 banger although I have a buddy at work who has an AMC 360 that he's willing to part with dirt cheap.  Complete with trans....  I just don't want to get in over my head, and before I know it my jeep is sitting for two years undrivable.  Or, I drop 4 or 5 grand into the power train.  My wife would leave...  Anyone on here ever had their wife leave them because of their jeep?  I wouldn't want to be the first....

Cant say I know the seller, but I was looking for some parts for my 2.5L and came accross this page:

http://akron.kijiji.com/c-Cars-vehicles-Parts-accessories-REBUILT-JEEP-2-5L-ENGINE-W0QQAdIdZ31009887

It's no use to me (mine is a '94) but maybe it will work for you...  And from the pics and the description, seems like it's been rebuilt right (but check the background on the seller to be sure!).
