Adding some ATF is done to try and cleaned gummed up sticky valve lifters sometimes it works most of the time it doesn't. Its not magic, it only helps when thelifter is sticking due to gunk built up inside of it due to lack of oil changes. It will not make up for wear issues.

Granted in my case i was using it to clean my crank case, but it can and will quit down some valve train noise like a ticking lifter (mid-late 90's Caravans were notorious for having at least one lifter shot from the showroom lol) i learned that trick from a mechanic who was always working on Caravans he would run i think 3L of oil and 1L of AFT would almost always work.

I use ATF before an oil change quite a bit. I make sure the engine is nice and warm, add a quart of ATF and let idle for 15 minutes. ATF has a very high amount of detergent in it. It breaks down old, gunked up oil very well.

The stuff cleans grease off your hands about as well as McDonals french fries!
