Front axle seal leak
« on: April 15, 2008, 06:38:17 PM »
After a ride on Saturday, I noticed oil dripping from the passenger's side axle tube. Looking at the shop manual, I see that there's a seal in there. Has anybody had to change this seal, and if so, do you have any advice? Also, is there anything else I should check (bearings etc.) that may have caused the seal to split? Thanks.

Didn't see any info on what rig you're running. If you have a D30 w/ vacuum disconnect, the seal is just outboard of the disco housing. Did mine . Wasn't terribly difficult, used the washers on allthread technique.

Yes, it is a D30. The seal went when I went to 4WD High.  Did you use the Allthread setup for pulling the old seal, or installing the new one (or both?)
Thanks for the info.

I just used the allthread with the larger washer on it and drove the seal into the vac housing area then fished it out. pulling the new seal into place from the outside took some finagaling to get it lined up straight but then it cranked right in. Don't forget to run some gear oil around the outside of the seal to help it slide in and around the rubber to help the axle slide through...Careful when installing the axle.
