CJ5 problem, ??? axle , tc, trany, or dshaft ???
« on: November 23, 2008, 07:01:45 AM »
I'm posting this for a friend's CJ5.  It is a '76 CJ5, 6cyl, 4sp man, lockout hubs, 2" body lift, 33x12.50's.  Here is what happened.  He was going through a dry stream crossing and couldn't make it up the other side because of the loose dirt, he locked the front axle and tc into 4x4 and started backing backing out.  While giving it gas in reverse he heard a light pop just as he reached the top and got to flat ground.  He unlocked the hubs and put it back into two wheel drive and drove home, 10-15 miles.  He had no problems or vibration or unusual noises.  Several days later he drove the Jeep again and while in 2 wheel drive he's getting a popping sound towards the back of the Jeep.  He checked to make sure he had unlocked everything and was fully in 2x4.  He then locked the fronts and went to 4x4 and he did not have and noise and the Jeep drove normal.  he went back to 2x4 and the noise came back.  I haven't had a chance to personally take a look at it so I'm just going by what he has told me.  Thought I'd put it up here and maybe get some ideas before I can get over to see it.  He's not really mechanically inclined other than very simple basics.  thanks ahead of time for any ideas on it.

Turned out to be a broken axle in the rear.  Cheaper to fix than the transfer case.
