no start
« on: March 14, 2009, 08:48:17 AM »
i have an 86 2.5l xj, auto trans, msd ignition and coil. the thing has been running good until yesterday. it rained hard the night before, when i went to start it, there was nothing. 3 months ago the same thing happened to me and took the starter out and had it bench tested, it was bad, so i replaced it with a quality duralast starter . the jeep has a push button to start it. im getting 12v at the switch and starter. the switch opens and closes like it should, jumped the starter (ol screwdriver deal) and it spins, but doesn't engage gear with flywheel? was wondering if this push button bypasses the ignition switch or if/when the ignition switch goes bad could this affect my set up with the button, not sure how the button thing really works, the button was there when i bought it, button has 2 wires on it and seems to be connected to 12v supply via the fuse box and other end to little tab on starter silinoid. don't think it does bypass because i need to turn the key forward then push button for the engine to start, if key isnt in, the motor just turns, or did till yesterday. just wondering if the switch in the column went out on me? not sure if the msd would have anything to do with it? im getting voltage at positive terminal on coil. ive tried to look at other posts just couldn't find one that seem to help. just seein what you all thought, any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

update on the no start deal, ended up pulling starter and testing it, low and behold duralast has failed me again. this pos only lasted 3 months, but it has lifetime, so i guess i cant complain to much.

well now the starter is in and turns over motor, but now it seems to be grinding a little, the same amount of shims are in as before. my question now is how do you know how many shims to use, guess this housing is a little bigger or something? do you just keep adding till it quits grinding?

I've always reused what was there for shims. Never had an issue, not that I've done a ton of starter jobs. No offense intended but not using Autozone parts tends to cut down on doing the same job repeatedly.

already know auto zone (cheap) parts are not the way to go, but got it going just added a shim. i would have gone with a reputable dealer for that kind of thing, just needed it real quick and it worked.. no offense taken i already knew the chance when i made the deal. the only best result is lifetime warranty. it was another life experience well understand.

For my Corvette the starter would go out for a while and I would just get the cheap Lifetime warranty one, and finally broke down and got the new A/C delco one and it worked great. Consider yourself lucky The wires corroded on the starter and shorted while i was driving it. Ended up frying the alternator, starter, and melted the starter inside the fender. If you know anything about vettes you have two options to remove the battery, 1. remove frame brace, cruise control, pull battery out on its side. this takes around 45 minutes. 2. remove fender cowl, slide battery out sideways. takes about 45- hour.  So i just had to let the battery melt down. It was sweet.
