sye question
« on: March 26, 2009, 03:28:45 AM »
has anyone ever dealt with chicago driveline. they want to just change my output shaft to cv style not shorten or eliminat. then fab a driveshaft with what looks like 3 cv knuckles(closest to transfer case) and make my drive shaft a wee bit longer . now I am sure thats not an sye. they said this would cost me 400(installed). and when i go with an8.8 I could use that same drive shaft. I know from past experiences in dealing with them that the make pretty damn good drive shafts. whats the diff tween sye and hack and tap or are they one in the same. I dont want to cut too many corners when it comes to my driveline. But price is always in mind. I have read that a front xj drive shaft bolts right into the sye and rear diff...is this correct? cause there are a pleathera of xjs in the junk yard. after installing trans case drop i realize i dont want to keep that and i want to upgrade. dont like the idea of my trans and tcase hanging by spacers. as always all info welcome even if you have to insult we to get it thru my thick skull. Oh and this will prob help. 95yj 4cyl auto on 4inch sua lift. still on 30.5 i bought from redrubicon a couple years ago but want to go 33s next

So they are saying that they have a cv slip yoke that fits in place of the current slip yoke?  I'd ask them to explain exactly what they are removing or adding.

tuesday and wed is half price days at junkyards by me so I am going to grab an xj shaft and show him. usually they work with customers on using stuff they brought in rather than new to keep the price down

what year xj am I looking for in this swap. and should I grab the front as well. or is it not worth doing the front. Is this considered an upgrade and will it still work(length might have to change) when I get sye and 8.8 later in summer

yes once i got the tcase drop in properly the vibes went away. I agree not going to pay to get drive shaft done twice. thank you for the extensive write up. what i am going to do is go to half off junkyard days in search of workable xj drive shafts. As well as explorer rear. the place i go will cut cost dramatically if I bring in workable parts then they are just basically making tube to length and balancing it. then I will be putting sye,8.8 and xj rive shafts front and rear. 250axle 250sye 250 for drive shafts. so 750 and I think I will have def upgaded. Then save for regear and new shoes, any comments welcome

I always recommend a TJ/XJ front driveshaft for use in the rear when installing a SYE, basically the same driveshaft you could pay a lot more to have custom built.  They only need shortened and balanced, runs about $65 around here.

Yes, it bolts directly to the yoke included in the SYE kits.  Be sure to grab the 4 bolts at the double-cardan end, most SYE kits don't include them.
