knocking noise when turning the wheel
« on: August 10, 2009, 10:03:35 PM »
Hello,

It's been a while since i have driven my jeep due to a brutal hand injury. I got in it the other day and when I would turn the wheel to the left i would hear a knocking noise as the wheels would turn. I haven't really dug much into it due to doc's orders, but was hoping someone might shed some light to get a jump start when I can grip a wrench again! TIA!

i had the same issue a while ago and it drove me nuts - i checked all the obvious ones (tie rods, ball joints, bushings, sway bar links) but i turned out empty - i took it to a frame shop and i was turning the wheel back and forth and the mechanic was under the front end touching all the links and joints - after about 1/2 an hour he figured it out: it was the trackbar bolt! not sure if you have the same problem but just in case you might want to check that as well.

Mine did something similar shortly after I bought it. Turned out to be a cracked leaf. Pretty small crack too but enough to make a bunch of noise while turning at low speed or while stopped.
