Heater core bolts
« on: November 19, 2009, 06:20:38 PM »
I'm trying to remove my heater core out of my 95 YJ.  Its down to get getting the box out itself. How many bolts are there and where are they at in the engine compartment area? Anybody know of any write ups? Thanks for any help!

If I remember right there are 4 of them.  You should be able to see all of the on the firewall once you remove the battery box.  You might also have a tight spot inside by the radio antenna.  I removed mine when I pulled the unit out of my '93.  It made it easier to put back in, but the antenna is a pain to put back.  There are some pictures search here and over on Jeepforum.

this is from the FSM (unfortunately there's no picture for YJ, only for XJ and they're different)

You are looking for four nuts that were roughly 12-3-6-9 o-clock with the battery tray at the 9 o-clock looking under the hood. They all have star washers on them and some of them may be serving double duty holding wiring or vac lines in place too IIRC.

If you live in the rust belt be careful taking off the nuts...the studs break easily so try to clean them w/ wire wheel etc before loosening.

If you don't have a welder you can get a female/female connector of the same thread from a hardware store to fix it if there is still enough left to grab onto that (there was on mine, it still had about 1/2" of the stud left.) Then just put a rubber washer & reg washer between that and the firewall and it will fit like a dream.
