Front Dana 44 ID help
« on: June 16, 2011, 08:07:40 PM »
I have a front Dana 44 from a wagoneer but I'm not sure what year it came out of. It is drivers side drop, no cad and I am having a hard time finding inner shaft seals locally. I know there is a way to find out what year but I'm not sure. It has " 10 / 79 " casted into the housing but I am not sure if this a month date. Any help would be appreciated!

Should be a fairly common item. Most of the D44 stuff is interchangeable. Parts Mike can help you I.D. it and more than likely have the part. I know you wanted local but they stock a ton of stuff!

Did you pull the numbers off the old seals?

Just off the passenger side of the diff on the front of the tube, there should be some numbers stamped. Take an old tooth brush and cleaner and clean up the tube to read it. If you can't read the numbers, take some chaulk and scrape it into the number. Then wipe excess off. T
Do you still have the diff tag on the diff cover bolt?

The build number should start with a 6 IIRC and be 5-6 numbers long.

However, basically, all D44 front diffs and shafts will have the same requirement for the axle seal.
