Leaking valve stem seals cause oil burn off when you first start your engine after a while of not running. I would check the compression too. Nothing to really worry about unless it burns oil all the time. Stepping up the weight of oil a notch may help. 10-30 to 10-40 or 15-40.
What happens is the oil is squirted up into the valve cover to lubricate the valves and rockers while you drive. If the valve stems seal is worn, it runs down the shaft and into the cyclinder where it is burned off at next start up.
If you get a new set a valves and had the cyclinder heads rebuilt, it would cure it for sure, but it may not be worth it if your compression is good and what not.
I would take it too a mechanic for a recommendation. My father-in-law (mechanic) drove with leaking valve stems fora decade in his old 1970 c10 with no ill effects.
