Electrical Upgrade - Accessorie's Wire Dressing
« on: May 28, 2010, 01:01:04 AM »
I just picked up a Uniden PC68XL CB from Fry's Electronics yesterday.  I'm required to have a CB radio for my local Jeep club, so I'll be throwing it in this Memorial Day.

While I was there at Fry's, I grabbed some wire, connectors, barrier strips, and heat shrink to clean up my gnarly "just thrown it together" wiring under my hood.  I'm going to run one 4 gauge wire off my battery to an inline fuse, then to a barrier strip, then split it to a smaller barrier strip for my accessories.  I plan on adding a line for my radio and amp later and I'm tired of just the nastiness I've been cultivating under my hood.  The individual fuses will exist on the bottom of the barrier strips.

Here's the start of it.  I'll post more picks as this project progresses.

The left wires (red, black, yellow) are 12,12,14 gauge for my fan, onboard air, and lights.  The right blue 14 gauge wires will be to the keyed ignition for relays.

The upper left block is where the main 4 gauge fused link will come in and go to the smaller barrier and future stereo junk (new constant power wire for the deck and a 8/10 gauge for a small 2/4 channel, haven't decided).

Here's the progress I made yesterday, so far:
  • Installed the cb radio and the antenna.
  • Installed the Ford fan (after cracking and knocking a hole in the top.)  I drilled the end of the main cracks stop it from going further and glued the majority of them.  I trimmed off the original mounting tabs with my angle grinder, drilled (3) 3/8" in the sides to attach a mounting brakets and installed rubber grommets in the holes, used some 1/16" thick angled 1"x1" aluminum to attach the fan to the radiator.
  • Re-routed the bunch of wires and relay from the battery down to the fender where I installed the barrier strips and fan control.
  • Installed a new 4 gauge battery lead to the main barrier strip.

What's left:
  • Add some wire loom to hide and protect more of the wire.
  • Make and install a cover for the top of the fan shroud where I knocked a hole in it.
  • Replace the smaller barrier strip, I broke the mounting tab holes using my drill.

I'm done for the weekend, these last few items will be worked on soon.
