Topic: Rear main oil seal leaking...crap

So there is oil leaking out of the tranny onto the rear drive shaft and it's flinging oil onto the under side of the jeep.  Is this indeed my rear oil seal?  If it is, how much am I going to have pay to get it fixed?  I think that is beyond my at-home-mechanic skills...

If  its a 4wd Jeep, its not the rear main seal of the engine. The last component of the driveline which attaches to the rear ds is the tcase.

Should be about a $12 seal, and easy to replace.  Remove the rear driveshaft, pry out the seal, and install the new seal.

Depending on the year of the jeep, you may want to support the rear of the jeep on jackstands or ramps to keep fluid from coming out once you remove the driveshaft and seal.

Good time to drain the transfer case and put in new fluid.
I started using the synthetic heavy duty atf in mine many years ago.
the transfer case is the only thing on my YJ that has not been rebuilt yet... At 200K..
I use the Amsoil ATF, the transfer case got obviously quieter with it when in low
range.

I have seen where that seal leaked because the tranny seal had let go
between the tcase and transmission and was draining back into the tcase,
but this is bad on some rigs cause the transmission used gear lube and the
transfer case uses ATF.

The transmission seal is supposed to leak out through a small drain
hole in the transfer case at the junction but some don't have the hole...
so it will fill up and run into the transfer case..
