2.5 tbi oil leak
« on: July 28, 2010, 02:03:51 AM »
I've got a large oil leak on the passenger side of my tbi 2.5L engine, any ideas on where it could be coming from?  I'm guessing the distributor hole but it seems like a lot of oil for that.  What about the oil filter area, is that prone to leaking as it is on the 4.0L engine?

maybe the oil pressure sensor. and like you said oil filter (or related like the gasket), distributor is less likely to spill out lots.

For what its worth, i have signs of a similar leak. Turns out its oil pushing out the dipstick tube, and splattering all around while driving.
Hope that helps, and hope you getter fixed up bounty.

I've got it cleaned up a little with engine degreaser, now to inspect it with the engine running.

Mine only spews out that dip tube when going about 2000rpm or higher.

The 90 degree brass ftting on the oil pressure sender went bad on mine, spewed oil everywhere.  if that is what is wrong, I got the replacement at Home Depot in the plumbing section.

Is that the silver thing directly forward of the distributor?

I searched today with the engine running and couldn't find the leak, maybe I need to increase the RPM's when searching.

Yep, thats where the oil sender is, I've seen both the fitting and the sender leak.

Matter of fact I'm on the 3rd sender and I've replaced the fitting too.
You need the fitting to keep the sender from hitting the  block on most engines...
Its teh same size as the hole but teh fitting keeps it out farthur...

Looks like it's pushing out the dipstick tube as it slowed down when I pushed the diptstick down further to better seal it off.  What would cause this?

imo
1. blowby
2. valve cover clogged (so the blow by does not go in the intake and the pressure buildup pushes the dipstick out) - might want to check the vents on the valve cover as well, not familiar with TBI but can't think of anything else.

Crankcase pressure i bet. Im learning a trend with these jeep engines. Everyone ive owned (and seen) had blow by like crazy and leaks oil one way or another. Whether its into the breather, or blowing out various gaskets.
Frankly, piss's me off. If i could get ahold of a 22re, or the right tranny and tcase to put my 305tpi in, i would be done with this poorly designed, underpowered, sad excuse for an engine.
