Dyno Numbers for SC v6 and a Hemi
« on: February 27, 2011, 05:20:28 PM »
Watched this episode today:

These rigs are loosing over 100 HP and TQ in the drive train for WHP numbers around 215.

I've reset my expectations for my 4 banger build and I think I'll be happy if I can get it over 90 WHP/TQ.

did you happen to get the numbers they flash it by so fast I only got the v6 supercharged numbers.

they also mention the v6 they had with portal axles and gear reduction box would add more drag then the guy with the hemi swap.  they weren't a perfect comparison.

the hemi swap jeep only looked to have tires and rims as addition..

still would like the numbers they posted..

the numbers I got for the v6 supercharged was

203hp before tuning
223hp after tuning

193tq before tuning
223tq after tuning

correct me if I'm  wrong again they posted it faster then I could get it to paper

I don't recall the exact number but the SC V6 outperformed the Hemi. Was probably 215 since that was the number I had in my head.

I though they said the hemi out-powered it by 10% but they had extra loss from portals and extra gear box plus the hemi was quite a bit more money to do vs the easy bolt on supercharger kit.. they gave it best bang for buck not most power

bang for buck and great alternative option over hemi swap..

really wish I would have taped it.

I think you can get the full episode online somewhere. I believe the SC outperformed it after the tune.

http://www.wranglerforum.com/f33/xtreme-4x4-ripp-vs-hemi-supercharged-jk-part-3-a-81955.html

HEMI
Cost $21,000
Max Power = 213.82 hp
Max Torque = 250.98

RIPP SUPERCHARGER
Cost $6000
Max Power = 223.02 hp
Max Torque = 227.97

supercharger more hp
hemi more torque

but really the numbers are very close and the cost of the hemi swap was quite a bit more if you ask me!!! and the hemi computer couldn't be tuned so you could prob get more but would cost even more cash..

Is 33% loss in power due to drivetrain normal?
Is there an average loss with Jeeps?

I think it is consistent number on 4 wheel drive vehicles.
In my project build I posted the information that the performance shop gave me before dyno testing my jeep and it was consistent with that number.
The numbers for the pull matched up pretty well to that too if you assumed that the 140k mile motor was still able to make 115 HP crank then I lost 33% in the drive line.
My thinking now is that if I can get my little 4banger to put down 90WHP then we accomplished something significant so that's my goal and I hope I can get there without a supercharger but if that's what it takes then I'll do it!

Powerblock full episodes:

It might be a few months before the supercharged JK and 5.7 Hemi dyno shows up.  I saw the show, and the Hemi had about 10% more torque and HP, but at a significantly higher cost.  One thing they don't mention is that you can get another 50 or so crank HP out of the hemi with just cold air intake, a chip, and exhaust upgrades - (for about $1000 more).  I have an '05 Ram 4x4 with the Hemi and have considered doing this.
95 YJ, 31 BFG ATs, 4.0 TB & spacer, Banks header, DynoMax CAT back, 19# inj, AEM CAI, 20 gal mod, Optima yellow
98 TJ, 35 BFG Krawlers, 4.0 liter, ax15, atlas 5:1, armor, Super 88 (under construction)
96 XJ Cheep Cherokee, 33s, 4.0 liter, AW4, future project
89 Waggy, 360 V8 727 dana 44s, it runs

I cannot speak for the Hemi trucks however I was able get 311 whp, and 360tq from my 06 Daytona charger, with a mopar intake and a diablo predator tuner canned tune on a dyno in May of 09.  The car was rated at 350 hp and 390 torque at the crank from the factory.  I think they( dyno operators) estimated between a 15 to 20% drive train loss on the car.  If our jeeps are loosing more then 30% to the drive train, no wonder they are such dogs.  I guess it also explains the low milage for a 4 cylinder engine.  I average to 19 to 20 mpg out of the jeep after everything I have done.

I corrected to speedometer for the 31 in tires, and the replacement engine out of a tj.  Thats it.  Other then maintainance, (plugs/ wires etc).   I was getting about 13  mpg when I first picked up the Jeep 5 years ago, so it is better then it was when I first got it, but a 90 mile a day commute ( round trip) is a killer.

95 and 97 is the same engine except for a missing temp sensor and the waterpump, the difference in mpg could be the old engine was pretty beat up and maybe the difference in the odometer if you didn't account for it at the time (before you adjusted  speedo/odo for the 31'' tires). It also matter where and how you drive it, hwy will always give you better mpg, and if you can get yourself to drive "slow" you get better results. Lot of guys that report the 15mpg (including myself) are using larger tires (33s) and have body armor, winches, heavy duty bumpers etc. My point is you can't compare a stock Jeep (or almost stock) with one that has a lift and tons of weight added to it - the more you lift the Jeep the more front section (or larger front section) you create by exposing more of the tires and axles, that adds to drag and decreases your mpg. Same goes for weight, you'll use more power to get up to speed or go uphill, and that multiplies if you're talking city driving, so you really need to compare apples and apples. Add larger axles (D44 or 8.8) and your drivetrain losses increase also, but sometimes is the only way to handle the 33+ tires.
