finally got the jeep running
« on: August 06, 2010, 06:59:46 PM »
after 4 months of sitting in the garage, I finally bit the bullet and put the jeep in. had issues with my yj not idling right plus it would struggle, sputter and stall. thought it was a byproduct of switching to the 4.0l throttle body and an e-fan. took it to The Jeep Shop in Chester Springs, PA and the guys there were really efficient and reasonable. it ended up being the temperature sensor for the computer. it was stuck at 73 degrees and it kept dumping fuel and it fouled the injectors completely. but now it runs great, except for the serious overheating that i didn't know was a problem until today, so i'm gonna hopefully get a new radiator in it by monday. did the whole radiator, water pump and thermostat trifecta, and it worked incredible. put in a 160 degree thermostat, and with a new water pump and radiator, i decided to push the hell out of it and drove it on the highway pushing 70 for a couple hours, jumping on and off to local roads too and it never got over 190 degrees. Then i took it in for inspection (PA requires it  :guns:) so i dropped it off at pep boys to get it inspected, they told me my high beams wouldn't stay on and that it was a crap dimmer switch. this was bull$h!t cuz i was cruising with the highbeams on the night before on the backroads. then they tell me my alternator was out of alignment and needed to be adjusted. they said they fixed it, then they tell me that the ignition switch has crapped out and that the engine keeps running another 5-10 seconds after you shut off the jeep. they say they fixed it. i went, paid over $800, drive home, and the engine keeps running after i shut off the jeep. so much for fixed. they charged me for something they didn't fix. i decided to see if anything else looks wrong, and the defroster and the cool air vent don't work either...they were before i dropped it off. so i drove back to pepboys to get them to fix the issue and get an understanding of why i was charged for the ignition if it wasn't fixed. on the drive (all 2 minutes literally) i hear what sounds like a scheisseload of gravel get kicked up. then i hear what sounds like a bolt getting sucked through the block. i sputtered into the pepboys and discovered the alternator was HALF a pully's width to the rear of the car. completely out of alignment. and they charged me for that. Stevie wonder could have managed that better! and the gravel and clunk sounds i heard was the BRAND NEW serpentine shredding off and whipping around, slicing a vacuum line, and 4 wires. my suggestion, STAY AWAY FROM PEPBOYS! you just end up paying them to break your vehicle, when you could easily do it yourself. btw they had it for 3 days and now it won't even turn over at all. i'm taking it back to the jeep shop and sending pepboys the bill. the jeep came out worse then it went in...
