I'm in the middle of rebuilding my 4banger engine (one piston detonated or was defective) and ran into a little/big snag friday while trying to get the harmonic balancer off the crank shaft. I had a blond moment and didn't realize the washer on the outside of the pulley was in fact a washer. I thought it was part of the pulley because of the caked on dried dirt. It all look the same to me and my thought process told me that my bearing puller wasn't going to work because the washer wouldn't slide out if the pointed end of the pulley puller was pushing it in. So i did the reverse way(the way to install the pulley). Well it started out fine until the washer wedged itself on the pulley puller rod and as a result the pulley broke into a bunch of pieces. Now how do i get it off the crank shaft? There isn't much left to the pulley on the shaft. I can take and post pictures if need be. Thanks for any help.

one way to do it if you have an angle grinder and a bearing separator - cut a groove with the angle grinder and the cutting disc in whatever is left off the pulley just so the bearing separator edges would fit in it, from there is simple (don't think you need me to explain the rest). if you have enough left on the pulley it could be that you don't need the groove (the bearing separator could fit under what's left off the pulley)

the other way to do it (pending pictures) - if the pulley broke close enough to the seal diameter (or maybe you can cut some more of it with the angle grinder) and you can take off the timing chain cover then remove the crankshaft and use the bearing separator under the pulley to remove it).

They make very small abrasive blades for dremel tools. THey work pretty good for cutting stuff like this, just make sure to cut through over the key not teh end of hte crank. If you nick the key its no big deal.
