Need your opinions (about tires)
« on: November 15, 2011, 10:08:09 AM »
First off - I've googled my mind till it hurts, read Pirate, jeep forum, tirediscount.com etc etc.

I am running 34 1050 r15 Swamper TSLs currently, I have a guy who wants to buy them from me, 70% tread left for $500, its a price I like considering I traded a set of 33 1050 KM2 for these a year and a half ago. That's 50% return on my investment.

My problem or issue that is bothering me.  I want to go to 12.50 wide to get a bigger foot print. I have 4.10 gearing D30 locked, 8.8 LSD, NP231,  how much power will 12.50 take compared to 10.50? Will I notice a major difference?

thanks for any opinions here.

I would say there is a difference but one size smaller and the kms are radial and better balanced so I would think ull be close to the same in the end

If I go 12.50 it will be 34 or 35s, 33s are to small for my SOA. But no larger than 35s. Don't want to grenade the D30.

most noticeable would be at highway speeds if you go to a wider tire, as far as crawling i doubt you'll notice any difference, they will be heavier though so you'll need to move that added weight around as well. Is not going to bog it down but you'll lose some of the top speed and decrease the mpg, can't tell you how much though as i never had the chance to run the difference, i went from 31x9.5 to 33x12.5

35's and 4.10's on the freeway will pretty much suck! If you have lots of hills it will suck with broken sharp pointy teeth!

if your going 35x12.5 with 4:10's I wouldn't do it. unless it's only off road rig even then I wouldn't like it.

I run 4:88 and still want more!!!
I run 33x12.5 for winter and 35x12.5 for summer.

I wouldn't go over 33's with 4:10s at 12.5 wide. stay narrow if you want bigger tires

I figured this would be everyones opinion. At least we think the same, makes me feel good I'm not an idiot.  I'll stay under 11.5 on width. thanks for your input guys. I appreciate 4bangerjp.

im not sure i get it.  you have 34 now and 33 is too small for a soa?  i run a 7 inch sua with a body lift.  i have the clearance for 39 and run 35.  33 would be fine.  and the difference between any radial tire and a bias tsl will still be a difference.  i ran 36 inch boggers and then switched those out for a set of 37's of a friend of mines and the larger tires were easier on the vehicle.  you could tell

35's  and 4.88 gears is pretty sweet good luck finding skinny 35's TSL's might be good in mud, but suck in rocks and are a beatch to keep balanced.37x12.50 and 5.38 gears is not bad on the road very close in power to my other 4 banger on 35's.
Now my big doggies need 5.86 gears for decent street driving.

When I said 33s are to small for the SOA I meant I have enough room for 37, I would like to put 35s on it, but was curious if the jump form 1050 to 1250 would be a huge difference. I did not think anything about switching form bias to radial, But that would make sense that radial would work better on road. I know I will go a little bigger to 35s or 36s. I have my eye on a set of pitbull radials.  The power on the highway is not so much a big deal as i only drive the jeep once a week at most.

I think most of the comments were assuming you used the Jeep on-road a good amount. Off-road I doubt you would notice any difference in the need for power with the wider tires.  Sounds like it would work out fine for you.

if you do mud and hill climb your going to want the extra power to 4.11 will suck wit 35x12.5's..

4.88's are nice but like I said I would like a bit more I'm constantly in 4wd low in thick stuff.

I am hardly ever in mud, I avoid it. Mud in FL is full of sugar sand which will kill any of your seals, same with the water crossings here.  I never run 4H always in 4L, nothing we do is at any speed, so the power thing really is not that big of an issue for me.

I would like different gearing but that will need to wait until I find a HP44 so I can have better gearing than 4.10s, Dont want to spend the $$ on 4.88 for front a rear lockers when my end game is a different front axle anyhow. Plus 4.10 to 4.88 is not that much different for the money I would save and simply wait.  I will drive this one until it blows up on me (if it does) then upgrade.

I'm on the fence on 1050 or 1250 still, I think the weight of the tire I select will probably play a large roll in my decision, at this moment in time.

The 10.5's would be a bit less weight and rolling resistance. But I don't know by how much. I would think that you would still be in the same gear no matter which tire you went with. When I had 33-12.5's and the 4.10's 5th gear was a rare thing to use. Fl is pretty flat so you might use some 5th once up to speed. But it will feel pretty gutless with either tire IMO.

I agree; I also run 4.88 and 33's (12.50), and still I would like to go to even lower gear (5.13 probably would be nice).
