Topic: PSC Power Steering Pump?

Well the P/S pump is starting to whine and I have been thinking about using the TC pump from PSC. It compares favorably to the stock pump in price and I hoped that it would handle the larger tires and such better. So I was wondering if anyone here has had any experience with said products. At this time I would only be swapping in the pump, upgrading the entire system would have to wait for later. A cooler wouldn't hurt either and maybe in the not too distant future. What are your thoughts?

i'm sure you checked but if you didn't have a look at the fluid level, it whines if it gets air in the system (low level can cause that).

Yup! Fluid level is good, belt is properly tensioned, and system is bled (I'm an aviation hydraulics man by trade). My Jeep was in an accident in it's previous life and the steering gear was replaced with something other than stock, and I plan to replace it sometime in the future but not feasible at this time. No, I think that the pump is tired and is on it's way out. I probably will go with the PSC unit, if no one here has any experience with them then I will go first and report my findings.

PSC has a great reputation. There is a few that I run with running some of their stuff. But mine is still all stock.

Nothing wrong with increasing flow and pressure a bit, but that does not fix a whining pump. If it's bled and the fluid is not arreated, it means fluid is bypassing the pump vanes, meaning the pump is worn out

My thoughts exactly. I checked around and found the dealership (wholesalemopar.com) wants over $200 for an OEM pump. Napa asks $120 for theirs and PSC wants $89 for a "performance" TC pump for my application. I think I'm going with the PSC pump.
I plan to upgrade my steering gear to a PSC sometime in the future, just can't do it at this time. It seems that my Jeep was damaged in an accident in a past life, and part of the damage was the steering gear. The gear that the "Bonehead Brothers" installed almost fit perfectly, almost. Three bolt holes lined up with the frame mount, the fourth not so much. So they threaded a bolt into the misaligned hole and bashed the crap out of the protruding thread to prevent it from backing out. Next they  cut the excess bolt flush with the housing and then drilled and tapped a hole partially in the bolt and partially in the housing to get it to fit, the hose ports are not where they belong either. It makes for a  very interesting install.  So I really want to replace all of that for a gear that fits and works, like a PSC.

What is the part number for the $89 pump?  I can't seem to find it, although they list some for $179 and $189.

PSC p/n is SP1210W. Although I just tried to find it and it is not coming up. The one listed sp1215 ($179) is for the pump with integrated reservoir, mine has a factory remote plastic reservoir, that is the sp1210w ($89). I guess I'll have to call them before I order to make sure it is the correct pump and it is still in stock.

I clicked on the link for the sp1215w pump, and saw a note at the bottom of that page that said if your reservoir is a plastic remote mount then you want the 1210 pump. I typed that number in the search box and was redirected to the 1210 page. I too, can no longer find the 1210 pump so I will call them when I am ready to order. I hope they still offer that pump, I'll be royally torqued if it is gone. Though that is the story of my life.

that note about 1210w is on the 1215 pumps, there is a 1210x but that's $160 or so,

just wondering where you saw the $89, sounds very reasonable (if not low), maybe give them a call and ask about the 1210w

HORRORS! I just got an email from PSC and the SP1210W is no longer available and should not have been on the site. DAMN! I emailed him back to see if they have a pump suited for my Jeep. One can always hope.

OK! Here's a clarification from PSC... the SP1210W was a pump that was custom built for a guy that put them  in Winnebago motorhomes (hence the W designation). That was the $89 pump. It was a one time good deal and never should have made it onto the website. When I clicked on it it was called to their attention and they removed it. They referred me to their sp1210x pump that is for YJ and XJ 4 and 6 cyl engines with remote reservoir for $189. I compared it to AGR's TC Super Pump at $185.  I have heard that AGR was good but have had some quality issues recently.  Since I have heard/read nothing but good things about PSC I will probably go with them. Heck, they sponsor Dean Bullock in the King of the Hammers, they gotta be good, right? My logic being that the OEM pump is in the $300 range my money would be better spent on a better pump, don't you think? And keep in mind that my steering gear is AFU and I plan to replace it soon with something stronger (PSC) so why not install their pump now when I need it instead of waiting to replace it again when I upgrade my steering system.
