TJ T-case linkage adjustment
« on: October 06, 2012, 11:08:43 AM »
How do you adjust the linkage on the transfer case for a TJ?  My Jeep had a 2 inch body lift on it and I currently lowered it to a 1 inch.  It goes into all the different modes fine, its just a little cranky at times to shift out.

you can't, just lower it some more (probably the lever at the t-case and the linkage are almost in line that's why it's hard to move).

Why wouldn't something like this work?

TeraFlex Transfer Case Shifter Linkage Adapter
For 97-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ & Unlimited
Quadratec Part No: 52554.210
Manufacturer Part No: 4947100

This shift link adapter kit will make shifting your 231 into all low range sectors simple and fluid. This adapter kit changes the trouble prone stock linkage which is not reliable due to independent body & drivetrain movement. The new bracket is bolted to the transmission & transfer case eliminating any negative movement. The heavy duty adapter kit is designed to provide problem free shifting even under extreme conditions. Works only with a 1" Body lift.

Why bother buying it from quardra crap, or terra crap. I made my own for the cost of about 10 or 15 bucks, piece of threaded rod, 2 heims, modified the bracket on the transfercase a bit and it shifts the transfercase like butter, still dislike the terralo, but the darn thing shifts really well with my mods

The linkage on my 94-YJ is all mounted on the tcase and does not use the body for support.

Maybe a jeep junkyard alternative?

Ok so here's where I'm at, I put the bracket that came with my 1 inch body lift kit on that attaches to the tub that lowers the pivot thing. The instructions talk about a adjustment bolt on the linkage rod. I think I have found it however I have no idea how to adjust this thing. The bolt doesn't really seem to do anything. It will only tighten so far and since I didn't know what I was doing I just kinda stopped. I haven't drove the Jeep yet, but just moving the t-case lever around while its sitting in the garage, 4 low seems to have a lot of play in it, and it just doesn't seem to shift well period..

if you have a 2'' B/L and only lowered the shifter 1'' the problem i think is how the linkage lines up with the lever at the t-case, the higher the shifter the more those 2 are in line rather than at an angle, just the way i visualize it at lease. for the play you have there its something else, maybe fixing that will fix your problem, dunno to be honest.

The Jeep had a 2 inch body lift on it when I bought it.  I just in the last couple days, lowered the Jeep.  I put a 1 inch body lift on it.  Just to lower it a bit and maybe ease some of the stress that the 2 inch was putting on things.

Last night I put on this bracket that came with my 1 inch body lift kit that lowers part of the linkage to what I guess would be back to a stock location.  However i think my only issue now is the amount of play I have..

this is currently how everything looks.  It looks to be a little cocked to the side and then you also see my new bracket I put on

looks like you're missing the plastic bushing at the end of the linkage. And by the looks of it the TJ has an adjustment (so i take back the statement that you can't adjust it, my YJ was fixed but the shifter was bolted to the transmission) - seems that if you loosen the bolt you should be able to move the linkage back or forward and then tighten the bolt, but then again i think your problem is the missing plastic piece (goes in that flat bar first and then the linkage snaps in).

hmm, both ends are sitting in a bushing, Anybody have a picture of what this plastic bushing is supposed to look like? and I tried moving the rod downward so it wasn't so cocked like so in the photo and it didn't help at all, it wouldn't go into 4 low at all.  When I take the lever inside the Jeep and push it all the way down to go into 2 high the 4 four wheel drive light comes on the dash but you just pull it back slightly and the light goes off.  and then you pull it back like it you want to go to 4 high and it dosen't come on at all.  along with the not going in to 4 low at all also.  This is all since I have tried to move the rod downward and tighten the bolt.

i don't see a bushing here or if there is one seems to be missing 1/2 of it.

I have no idea what you mean by moving the rod downward, it's forward or back or in/out if you wish, maybe you're talking about a different rod.

It's very different than the YJ though so my image of what you have there could be wrong.

Both ends are sitting in a bushing, the instructions called for the end you see farthest in the photo to be ground down to a nub rather than a point, that is maybe why you don't see all of it. I'm not sure.  I made a appointment with the local Jeep dealer for next friday.  (I know) I have a little over a week to figure it out otherwise I'm gonna have to bend over and take it...

It looks like the shift lever in the cab moves the rod in the picture. Then that rod moves a rotating plate on the bracket attached to the body.  Then I would guess that the plate moves another rod that actually moves something on the TC.  Is this correct?

So the adjustment procedure would be to loosen the rod length adjustment clamps, then make sure the TC is solidly in 4low for example and then make the rods the right length so that they can push the TC all that way into that position.  Then verify that it will go fully into the position all the way opposite (2H).

Here is the adjustment procedure from the FSM:

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/4-wheel-drive-lever-broken-1090607/

Worn or missing bushings could cause a problem but it sort of sounds like you have already checked that.

can someone tell me if i'm imagining things or there's no bushing here

it could be on the other side but it doesn't help the endplay
