Pinging problem
« on: January 01, 2013, 06:04:39 AM »
About two months ago I started to hear a little bit of pinging in the morning
when cold and I lugged it down a bit.
Now it does it in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd but only when it's cold and it has to
come up to full temp before it goes away.
Motor is stock and is in pretty good tune, not throwing any codes.
Would a bad ping sensor throw a code?

there's no knock sensor on the '95

maybe IAT is bad, or check the plugs make sure they're not buildup with deposits (although in that case would be pinging when warm as well).

if it's out of range, if the output is wrong but within the limits i don't think it would - you can test it though, i can lookup the values if you don't have the FSM. Start with the plugs mind you, that's easy to check.

Thanks for the info, I'll look it up in my FSM.

Update:
Cleaned and gapped the plugs, no change.
Replaced the ACT (air charge temp) sensor, no change but
what a difference in drivability. It got rid of all of the stumbles
and flat spots I had gotten use to over the years.
For $26.00 it's a good bang for the buck!

run high octane and see if gets rid of the pinging, you can try a cooler plug too and see if that helps.

Thanks for this tip.  I've had the suspicion for several years now that the sensors on my YJ, although not bad enough to throw codes, are not quite 100% good either.

I've been running the better gas here (Premium) since 5 years ago to eliminate pinging with the cheaper gas (Magna).  It was a good solution for me since I only drive the YJ about 1200 miles per year.

i always ran 1 number cooler plugs with regular, with the stock rated plugs i got pinging sometimes (rarely but i did), the colder plug helped with that. Also, when i put in the hi-flow filter sucking air from under the hood it got worse, no issues once i got the snorkel installed.

Just a update.
So the pinging problem got worse, pinged most of the time,
ran like crap when cold, idled low even when warm,
and it was taking along time to warm up.
Did a full tune up, and replaced all filters, no results.
Checked the fuel pressure, and found my problem.
Was sitting at about 45 lbs. and did not change when the vacuum line was pulled.
$ 87.00 for a new pressure regulator and it was back on the road running like a champ.
I guess it was messing with computer some how, so I reset it before restart.

A decent auto parts store can look it up for you.
I think a lot of people on this forum have had good luck with the Champion brand.

Thanks for the reply, I will ask them.

I would be very interested in the details behind it, like what makes a plug cooler and how it helps. Isn't it the combustocombustion the biggest cause of the heat? Like I said, I am a bit illiterate when it comes to spark.

I am not expecting to have a problem with this I finish the rebuild, but it is good info for the future. Plus, I like to learn about stuff.
