SD Card Reader no longer works
« on: December 08, 2013, 09:48:31 PM »
Here's the deal; after rebuilding my PC, some time ago, the SD and MS readers in the front of my PC stopped working.  I really did not notice it until after a while, and I had installed and uninstalled a bunch of stuff, so there was no obvious cause.  Since the PC case is hard to access, I figured this was a good enough excuse to buy a new USB 3.0 card reader, so I got this one because it was USB 3.0 and SDXC and SDHC compatible (all my cards fall here).

Well, it turns out that reader is also not working.  Today, I re-installed Windows 7, and the reader worked for some time, but after I finished installing everything, it no longer worked, so it definately sounds like a driver is screwing me over.  I know many of you are more computer savvy than me, so can anyone tell me what I should do?  The cards are not being read at all, it's not just the auto run...  And there are no ! marks regarding the drivers (all seem to work).  I also tried uninstalling and re-installing the drivers, but no progress.  I also did the SC QUERY FASTFAT, thinking it may have been off (and this would be causing the problem), but it shows it is running, so that does not seem to be the problem either!

Now, I just reloaded all the software into my PC, so I am NOT re-formarting; but what else could I do to get the card readers to work?  As it, I can connect the camera to the USB (even the ports on the new reader work just fine!  GO FIGURE!), but the problem is that if the camera's battery wears out, I could loose some files...

Any tips are greatly welcome!

The front panel is connected via a cable that easily goes on backwards on some motherboards. And the darn thing pops off way too easy..

1. make sure you install the manufacturer mobo drivers (latest) and not the default microsoft ones, then also do a bios update
2. go into your device manager and into your USB port settings and uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device" (something about saving power under power management) and see if that makes a difference
3. make sure none of your devices in Device Manager has an exclamation mark
4. if that doesn't help check your bios settings for USB (make sure the ports are turned on), and also might want to try another USB port on your motherboard.
5. (this is a long shot) some card readers (actually most of the ones with USB ports on them) come with 2 usb connections, make sure they are both/all plugged in.

my guess is #1 or #2 in that order

I'll check, but I doubt that's the issue; if it were, the front USB connectors (also on the same cable) would not work...

#1 has been done many times over...
#2 Where is that option?  I could not find it...
#3 No marks
#4 will try it, but the USB part of the reader is working so I think it is more a card driver issue...
#5 Mine is only one connector with external power.  Both are connected.

3. in device manager, USB, expand that, right click on one of the devices in the list, click properties and then Power Management tab, uncheck "allow the computer...

EDIT: I think you can also get rid of those options globally if you pick "Always On" in the power management scheme

My USB's don't even show the power option...  But my computer is set to never go into sleep mode (when I leave the PC on, it's because I am running a process or downloading a file, so I don't want it to go into sleep mode).

what do you have under >Universal Serial Bus controller (you should have 1 or more USB Root Hub entries along with the USB chipset entries).

it's not about going to sleep, it can turn off certain devices if not in use (like monitor, harddrives, etc).

My Windows is in Spanish (sorry about that!) but this is what I have:

So (roughly) it translates to this:

Intel root USB 3.0 "Concentrator" (makes no sense in Spanish either!)
root USB "Concentrator"
root USB "Concentrator"
USB 2.0 "Concentrator"
USB 2.0 "Concentrator"
Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible host controller
USB Storage Device
USB Storage Device
The rest are in English...

Now, I have 2 HDD connected through USB, and another USB Hub (D-Link DUB-H7 USB 2.0 Hub) connected as well...

just to test, right click on every single one of those, go to properties and if it has the power management tab uncheck the said checkbox (some of them dont have it, probably the "intel 8 blah blah blah ...")

and reboot.

see if that makes  a difference. I'm out of ideas otherwise. only other thing maybe to plug it into a USB2.0 port if you have an internal one on your mobo, or a 3.0 if it's currently in a 2.0. Also, try and unplug any other USB devices prior to rebooting, just in case it's a power limit (i had this issue on a small computer, a Zotac, the USB stopped working if i had too many devices using power plugged into the built in ports).

concentrador would probably mean HUB in a technical translation (which is a more common way to call it, concentrator is in spanglish :roflol:)

and i thought only the Frech use a non-english version of the windows OS, i guess not
