So, I FINALLY managed to pull out the temperature sending unit and replace it with a new one.  Was a bit of a PITA, as the sensor is on the rear driver's side of the block, between the valve cover and the fuel injector's cables, so it's a bit of a challenge to get in there (ended up getting inside of the engine compartment and standing on the front axle to be able to see what I was doing).  Not to mention, it was stuck, and a falling apart!  Anyway, here is what came out; no wonder it was not reading right!



Keep in mind there is suppossed to be a plug attached to the top of this!  Anyway, now on to the oil pressure sending unit (ANOTHER PITA!).  But that will happen after the Costa Rica vs Holland game!

It looks really messed up. Was it leaking through it?
