Hi everyone,

My name is Charlie and I have a problem.  I am addicted to jeeps.  But I'm very glad I found this support group.  Actually I have lurked on this forum in times past and I am pleased to say that I think the resources here have developed considerably.  Hopefully I can become a knowledge contributing member of this online community someday.  But today I am probably closer to the asking stupid questions phase.
Anyway I have this problem--I mean project: 89 YJ 2.5 that I have been...lets say developing for a while now.  I am now at a critical stage in the project and its time to share my experiences and subject them to your input.  So I will start my own thread on the project page.
What else..  I am almost 2 years out of college, I find myself working as an electrical engineer of sorts which causes me to travel a lot, mostly overseas.  I live in Rhode Island; its actually a state-not part of New York.  I don't suppose there is anyone else out this way on here?  I know some of you guys are from NH.  I also just bought an 04 TJ Columbia Ed. I6 to cart myself around until I can get the Yj off the ground.
Yeah so, I'm looking forward to communicating with you guys and girls.  I am going to need some help.

There's a lot of answers already in the FAQ, but no need to feel bad about asking questions.  I think it's why we all ended up here. (me at least)  Now that I'm reading this thread, I realize I never wrote an intro...

Married with a son.  I like to go about doing things the wrong way first to... 1. gain valuable insight by recreating the wheel  ???  2. get most of you fed up with me  :brick:  3.  to see what can and can't be done   4. To save my money for taco tuesdays  :bandit:
I live in Southern California, attempting to join the Hemet Jeep Club (in process membership), and I've had my 95 Jeep YJ since Thanksgiving of 2008.  Love to tinker with it.

Hey, what did I miss?

Glad to be a part of another Jeep forum. There's no such thing as too, much Jeep info. I have a '95 YJ w/ a 4 banger. No air, no radio, no worries!

Hello Everyone,

I live in Southern California and have always been a fan of Jeeps, but have never had the opportunity to own one until recently when I purchased a 1989 Jeep Wrangler YJ from a private party that sold it because they had a baby on the way. It had 68,000 original miles on it when I bought it about 6 months ago and I feel that I got a really decent deal on it. I have put about 5 or 6,000 miles on it since I bought it and done a few minor repairs and have done some minor restoration work and mods on it since I have gotten it. It's very clean, with nice original paint and interior. No rust at all. Never been off-roaded or beat up that I can tell. Runs great. But, we call it "The Hill Finder" because it is so underpowered on the freeway and when climbing hills. I use it as my daily transportation, so I have a love/hate relationship with it. It is great when I am not in a hurry to go somewhere or do not have to keep up with traffic on the highway. The whole family loves to cruise along the beach during the warm weather and it's a lot of fun to drive on the weekends. But, man is it tough to deal with mountainous terrain and highway driving. I love this Jeep because it is so clean and in such fantastic condition for it's age, but I often find myself wishing I was in a later model TJ with a six banger. Came here to see if I could learn a few tricks from you guys on getting a little more go-juice from the ol' girl. Looking forward to learning a few tricks of the 4-banger trade.

hey guys,

long time XJ owner but just got a 2001 TJ for my DD. Been wanting a TJ for a long time and came across one locally and could not pass it up!

Specs:

134,000 miles

Brand New 4 cyl with 8k miles on it

Brand New 5 speed tranny (I think it is AX-15)

while motor and tranny were getting replaced previous owner also did water pump, alternator, radiator and hoses, brakes, clutch and some other things (under hood looks brand new).

30/ 35 axles

31" BFG all terrains (75% tread) with like new canyon rims

new spice Bestop - jeep is gunmetal blue

carpet and interior plastic in awesome shape --- rear seat great but front seats so so

mods by previous owner:

sony headunit Mp3 S Drive 52x4

infinity front speakers - kappa's I believe

Kenwood 2 ways in soundbar

HID conversion in headlights --- cibie housings --- not sure on color temp but looks to be similar to silverstars --- the wiring is half ass so I am going to redo most but they are very nice and easy on the eye on and off road

jensen 8 inch sub in center console --- going to take out and put a rear marine 12 behind seat in slim box --- wiring for sub is kinda ghetto --- going to redo but it has a nice alpine mono amp

My mods:

2.5 - 3 inch lift with no bigger than 32

front and rear aussie lockers

front rear synthetic diff oil with lube lockers

stubby front bumper (sniper fab)

stubby rear bumper (maybe tnt customs/ treks off road)

WRF DIY hy line tube fenders and DIY rear tube fenders (just a bolt on tube fender)

4.0 Tb (have 3 in garage!)

banks header (on the way - shipped)

2.5 magnaflow cat ( on the way - shipped)

either magnaflow or borla muffler or whatever my local custom exhaust shop has in stock/ equivalent. I have read flowmasters though on all my 4.0's sound great are loud on the 2.5. I want to keep this jeep quiet as much as possible but still have some ooomph for the hills (already learned quickly on highway in 5th! go from 75 to 40 in seconds). I am going to have the shop bend up rear pipe as well and put a flex pipeafter header to prevent cracking. Also going to heat wrap most of exhaust starting right before cat (not header maybe downpipe). I noticed my floor and carpet got warm on first long highway trip.

rear led lights (ordered)

rugged ridge cold air intake (ordered)

assortment of armor - warn 30 and 35 diff gaurd (again already in garage!), corner gaurds (gen right or PSC), rocker armor (not sure yet), hi tuck belly skid

and eventually electric fan conversion

4.10 gears and alloy shafts 760x u joints probably from yukon or cheap deal

oil change - just did - went with royal purple 10w-30 and k and n filter and a can of restore (i know not needed on new engine but for piece of mind... also Lucas fuel injector cleaner every gas tank/ some stp and sometimes seafoam - those are my snake oils.

and probably a whole lot more!

Lots of good info here and glad to be aboard!

you should already have 4.10 in your axles
if you replace them i would go straight to 4.88 (which is max that you can put in there).

yeah, from what i know all 4 cyl manual Transmission Jeeps came with 4.10 gears. Should be listed on the axle tag as well (I think).
