love the forum, thanks for setting me up. I have a 01 wrangler 2.5 of course. not much on upgrades, just a firepower igntion, coi, electric fan. plan throwing on a 4.0 tb and changing the exhaust soon.

living in south florida, i havent had my doors or windows on the jeep in over a year. and it is the only way to travel to Key west.

Hello and Thank you.

New to Jeeps I own a 91 YJ  my last 4X4 was a Toyota 15 years ago.  I've got a couple of close friends that have owned and modded Jeeps but no longer own them.

professional civil enginer by day, side fab shop mostly working on friends and other folk's heeps nights/weekends.  had all sorts of rigs... progression: in 2000 had a lifted 88 XJ & gave it a good college beating, built an 86 XJ with TBI 4.3L V6/700R4, had a few run of the mill YJ's little lifts while was into imports hopping up an 03 RSX-S, then back to jeeps... 99 TJ with Ford 8.8 and goodies in the 4.0L, then a 95 YJ with a SBC350 SOA'd & etc, then had a 07 JK Rubicon on Q78's but it hurt to much to bend it up in the woods so sold that.  married family man with one 4.5 yr old daughter.  i recycle jeeps when its worth it.  parted out 8 XJs and 1 TJ over the past couple years.  i just finished building a one ton blazer with a SBC350 for one buddy and finished doing tube fenders/corner guards/sliders on a friend's TJ.  gettin ready to put a propane set-up into a buddy's YJ.  now i've got a DD 98 XJ on 31's and starting my next build of a dedicated wheeling rig.  nearly from scratch 1947 Willys CJ2A.  goal is to be as capable as possible starting on as much of a budget build from parts swapping and free junk.

got the crusty CJ2A drivetrainless (& $) for doing a tranny swap and stripping said drivetrain for my carpenter buddy.
got a free 2.5L & drivetrain and was told it was good running engine little smokey and no 4th gear on an ax5.  its a toss up whether i dig into that tranny or use an AW4 i got laying around from an XJ i parted last year.  thinking the AW4.
so i landed here in starting my 2.5L research as i've never had a 2.5L jeep and a 4.0L doesn't fit under the hood of a CJ2A so... why not i said!  contemplating getting the engine 30 over since i'm tearing it down anyways for new rings and prolly a head job.  but i've done next to no research on that and need to call my local engine shop too.  also contemplating running the gotpropane.com propane kit so no ecu/ecm wiring to have to deal with.

i get myself into way too many projects all the time.  i love wheeling.  i'm addicted.

welcome to the forum. excited to see how the 2.5l willys turns out... ever since I wheeled my yj i always thought it would be a great fit in a willys power and space wise. I doubt you would be-able to use the ax5 and have a rear drive-shaft. My dad and I are currently working on a 4.3l swap into a rusty cj2A, problem is the project is under funded and lack of motivation (I have a jeep of my own to build)..
1990 YJ 4cly, ax5, 2.5 inch BDS lift, 31 MTr\'s,  Powertrax-lockers all around, track-bars removed, boomerang shackles, warn m8000 winch, electric fan. [sold but not forgotten]

Hello 4Bangers!
I'm fairly new to Jeep ownership and have had my 91 YJ for less than a year. It was purchased as an alternative to getting quads for my wife and I to enjoy when we head to the mountains. I have started making changes to it and right now am in the process of swapping out a tired motor with a newly rebuilt one. Plus I'm adding a few changes like an inertia ring which I designed and some of the standard upgrades like to 4.0 throttle body. I'm hoping the engine will be back in next weekend.

So with that said, I'm sure I'll have lots of questions as I get further into the build.

Hello from Norway.

Driving a -98 XJ, currently lifted 2 inches, with 31" BFG Mud Terrain, Bushwacker cut-outs and Smittybilt XRC front bumper with an 8500 lbs Come-up winch.

Reason for coming here is that, even tho there are lots of other jeep forums around, not many of them can help someone with a fourbanger :P
So I want to say thanks for letting me in, and hopefully I will be able to help others, aswell as beeing helped :)

Hey guys, obligatory introduction post here. First forum I've ever seen with Epic Fail Guy emoticons, so that's win already.

I've been driving a 98 2.5L Auto TJ for 6 years now. Bumped it up to 33 x 12.50 tires and 2.25" BB about 3 years ago without regear, still on 3.73s. The 2.5L has been plenty for me for all my needs except for highway driving with this gear ratio. My main goal has been to keep the thing as fuel efficient as possible, so the quest for HP has been to restore the use of 3rd gear on the highway, which it lugs immediately out of right now and back down to 2nd, so highway driving is spent near the rev limiter at 4500 RPMs in second gear. To that end, I'm hoping that adding a bit more power will allow me to use 3rd gear on the highway again and ultimately increase drivability and fuel economy a bit in doing so.

I've already installed a 4.0L TB and done the 19g gas tank mod, but have not yet ported the intake manifold neck to match the TB. I plan to switch to a Ford electric cooling fan, swap in 19lb injectors, and port the neck of the intake manifold to match the TB, and to do each sequentially over the course of several full tanks of gas to measure the impact on fuel consumption. If that combination of things doesn't get me 3rd gear on the highway then I plan to swap in a Ford 8.8" rear and HP Dana 30 up front both geared in 4.56.

To anyone interested in the fuel efficiency of their 4cyl, I've been logging my mileage for the past four years and noting the points at which I did a few mods. I just posted that full history on JF along with a regression analysis I ran to analyze some of the variables. That post is at: http://tiny.cc/agwejw .

Thanks for the very informative site, I've used a lot of the information here already in executing some mods and optimizing the performance of my 2.5L.

Hello and Welcome! I too have the 98 4banger auto on 33s. I swapped the dana 35 for the 8.8 and went right to 4.56 although there was some pressure to head up to 4.88s. I can highway drive now. Check the build threads if you want to check out my build and mods. I've had a slew of "go fast" "better MPG" parts, and haven't really gained much from them. Biggest gain came from gears.

Hi all,
Had my 97 for 3 years 2.5 (of course) 5 speed, 4" lift, running 33.12.5 DuraTracs. It is my daily driver except when I am on the Harley. I love my Jeep and I am looking into some performance mods as well as tire carrier and protection. I also have a Yaesu 7900 2 meter ham radio installed.

Good evening everyone.

I have been a 4-banger Wrangler owner since 2000 when I bought my then bone-stock 1990 Wrangler with 5-speed and hard top. It has evolved a LOT since then. Different lift kits, gears, tires, seats, winch, bumpers, all that jazz. One thing that has not changed is the mighty 4-popper. In fact, I just gutted it out yesterday to rebuild the tired, 180,000 mile old engine.

Going to deck the head and the block, new internals, stock-ish cam, new clutch. Going to be a fresh beasty when I am done!
2.5, ax-5 (Will want to upgrade this), NP-231 with SYE (Will upgrade to a D-300 and AX-15 all at once), D44 XJ rear with ARB, D30 front, 4.88's, winch, SOA on RE 1.5" springs, 35" Baja Claws.

Great site, good tech.  Happy to be included.

Long time jeep guy, first one with a little engine (also first one that is fuel injected).  My thanks to the creators and mods of this site.
