Hood Popped up on Freeway

Forgot to latch my hood down a few weeks ago after finishing the Nightmare Gulch run. It was getting dark and we were all airing up tires. I use my compressor which clamps to the battery so I had my hood up. After I packed up my compressor I jumped in and we hit the 14 fwy at Red Rock Canyon, as soon as I hit 65 mph my hood popped up and folded over my roof breaking my windshield and blinding me with a loud bang, I nearly had a heart attack. We had to strap the hood down to get me home. The next weekend I called Scotty's Jeep and 4X4 in Fontana and he had a Red TJ hood which was a perfect match. After doing some pricing online Scotty's $350 price was my best deal and they even installed it for free! Scotty's has a huge collection of Jeeps if anyone needs parts this is a great source, I even picked up a set of diamond plate rear quarter panels cheap while I was there. http://www.scottysjeepand4x4.com/

If someone is looking for a part I always recommend scotty's. I have yet to buy from there, but it is a large Jeep wrecking yard near the California speedway.

Wow, you've been pretty damn lucky lately, I hope you bought your lottery tickets!

Glad to hear nobody got hurt.

Damage caused by my own brain fart is the hardest for me to deal with. A few weeks ago I did not even want to talk about it, but now I'm over it and dealing with my AX5 issues which are simply due to hardcore wheeling almost every weekend for the past few months.

I had it bad last month with the throughout bearing, door latch, and 2 screws for the brake line that leaked oil on my rear window on the freeway, and new brake line I bent myself, and replace the stripped brake cylinder all within about a month. Thank god I got tools.

Quite a few flat fendered Y/TJs use the old racer hood pins to lock down their hoods. Its rather difficult to see if your hood latches are closed due to the curve of the hood. Those hood pins could easily be seen across the brow of the hood.

Glad things at least turned out cheaply (lifewise and totalling the Jeep in reaction).

Any pics of the damaged part? Wanna keep it for anyone wanting to practice welding on sheetmetal?

a friend of my dad's did that with his cj8 and it bent his windshield frame.. and a few years ago when heading up to our hunting spot my grandpa didn't secure the windshield down properly on his trailered cj2a and it slammed up on the freeway.. the frame bent back like a full foot and really reduced our head clearance.. but nothing we couldn't fix when we got back home.

I let Scotty's keep my old hood but kinda wish I had pictures now. I am amazed the windshield frame did not get damaged, could be the hard top gave it some support. The hoodpins are a good idea, I've also been looking at the gas strut hood lift support kit. If I rig some kinda power outlet for my compressor I would not need to pop the hood when we go wheeling.

With that little panel area behind the fender flare on the fender (in front of the firewall), make a door on each side to connect to electric. You can also make it a vent door to the floor area when its a hot day and let air in at speed. My Dad's old Scamp had a floor vent door. FJs have what I'm talking about.
