JK Rubicon rear D44 axle tubes
« on: August 07, 2007, 08:47:10 AM »
Have you seen the JK Rubicon rear D44 axle tubes?  Went on a site seeing tour of the dealership today and they are huge (looked about like Ford 8.8 tubes), this axle seems to be a very strong D44, stronger than the XJ D44.  What I don't like about it is the very low shock mount location, close to the wheel, which is good, but too low.  The JK Rubicon front D44 on the other hand has small tubes that look about like the ones on the D30.

Larger tubes, and the pinion diameter at the bearings is akin to the D60.

Had to go and change the D44 so it takes even more oddball parts, they can't make the D44 the same across the board.

The shock mounts suck, but maybe being tucked in behind the tire will help a little.  4" lift and 37" tires and it won't matter as much

Looks like what makes a D44 a D44 is just the ring gear!  They have gone and changed everything else at one time or another.

Probably due to trimming the fat off assembly costs year after year.  Very little is overbuilt or built heavy anymore.

Yeah, cost reduction. Plus their market studies show that for the majority of buyers the D35 is fine since they do not go off road with big tires.
