97 tj relocating evap canister.
« on: September 19, 2007, 07:39:21 AM »
Alright so I am going to make my own snorkel out of aluminum and direct it out of the driver's side.  So I need to relocate the evap canister.  I know where I can relocate it too (battery tray under brake booster), I'm  just not really sure how. The lines that run to and from the evap are metal (I think), well in any case they don't flex like regular hose.  And i found a guy online with a write up and stuff who relocated the same type of evap canister that I have and said that there was no need for new hardware, and that the hoses and wires fell right in place...  That means that he must have bent his lines, unless his aren't made of metal, which I doubt.  Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to ask is, is this possible without replacing the lines with something more flexible?  Is it ok to bend the lines?

Here is the writeup I'm referring to.  There is a picture and a small description about relocating the evap at the bottom of the page.

That evap canister isn't going to work properly laying down like he has it in the picture.  There's a reason all the hoses come out the top.

One other note about that setup you linked to.  His setup has created a trap like in a sink - a low spot for condensation and dirt to collect.  I would make sure that you leave an easy way to clean it out/ drain it.  A functional snorkle system should not have any of the pipes lower than the connection point at the Throttle body.

Yea, I'm going to direct the tubing straight out the side of the hood and then up.  I think it looks better too.

hmmm. that's good to know. maybe I'll be able to mount it at close to the same angle.  I'm not basing my design off of his snorkel at all.  I was merely using him as a reference, because it's the only thing I've seen where someone has relocated the same type of evap canister that i have.  Also he stated that it was easy, and that no hardware was involved, this didn't seem right to me.

alright, so i went out and have been tinkering with it for a bit, I can make it sit in the tray much like it sits on the side of the wheel well, there is just one hose that is giving me trouble.  The hose that goes from the canister or purge thingy to the intake manifold.  It won't flex like the one from the gas tank to the canister.  Could I replace this hose with some thing more flexible, or can i just bend it?  I'm thinking bending it is a bad idea.

ok, well I'm officially a moron.  The "metal" hoses are in fact just hard plastic.   :brick: I just went to advanced auto parts and got some vacuum hose and it works like a charm.  Maybe if I ever get this done (and also a digital camera) I will show some pictures of the final product: A nice shiney, AND UNRESTRICTIVE snorkel.
