Topic: tune up

I am planning an engine tune up next week. I have a 2001 TJ with 2.5L motor with 66k miles. I want to change spark plugs, wires, dist. cap, rotor, and fuel filter. I don't know about the coil yet. maybe inspect it while there.

What set-up do you folks like? I have access to all auto parts stores (Autozone, Napa, Advance, etc.) I have no loyality to anyone. I have even considered letting the local garage do it all for me, but that just seems lazy. :laugh:

I am leaning towards the Champion truck plugs, Duralast wires, cap, and rotor. I have not found a fuel filter online yet, so I will ask while at the AZ store.

Any help would be appreciated. I know that this has been posted before, but I did not see anything very current. Is there something new that I have not read about yet?

I would go with the FirePower kit from Performance Distributors, comes with coil, cap, rotor, and wires.

Any of the parts store stuff will do just fine as long as the terminals are brass instead of the cheaper aluminum. You won't notice any difference with the expensive performanc estuff.

Don't think the TJ has an external fuel filter.  It is in the sending unit, I think

I disagree.  The FirePower kit made an improvement on my jeep, and the coil allows you to open the plug gap up to .065"

It actually made a "seat of the pants" improvement? Did you notice a fuel mileage increase?

Thanks. I will probably change to Champion truck plugs, Duralast wires, Duralast cap and rotor. I will leave the coil alone for now. I appreciate the advice. I would like to try the Firepower kit next time, the coil may need it by then.

I looked up that kit. It looks like a lot of advertising hype. For instance, they say that their coil is "so powerful, you cannot run regular plug wires....." That statement is just retarded. It is $180. I am guessing that quality stock replacement parts would cost around $85-$100. So if I were replacing all that stuff at once already, I might consider buying it, but definitely not to replace perfectly functioning parts because I am looking for some horsepower.

Yes, a 'seat of the pants' improvement.  Engine ran a lot smoother and quieter as well, but that's not an accurate indication of the upgrade because who knows what condition the parts were that I replaced.  As for MPG, I get between 15-18mpg (best of 21mpg) with 5.38 gears and 36" tires, so I think it's part of the package that helps get that good of mpg.

I go with whatever the local auto parts store have as well.  Last time I did a tune up, a few years ago (driven maybe 14k in the last 3 years), I used Duralast stuff with Champion plugs (pretty much the same thing you're looking into using).  Works really well, and I get 20mpg.  I got 18mpg one time, but that was because we had 20+mph winds all week.

A trip to Auto Zone cost me $50. That sounds a ton better that $180. I know that I am not getting a SUPER coil, but I will take the chance that mine is just fine.

Are there any distributor caps with brass terminals for the 2.5 other than the ones from Performace Distributors?

A lot of stock replacement caps have brass terminals. Just open the box at the counter.

Thanks.  For some reason I thought they would be hard to find and ordered a Performance Distributors one for the tuneup.
