89 yj wont start....
« on: September 10, 2008, 05:27:52 PM »
hi all i am new to the forum and new to jeeps too, my problem is i bought a 89 yj 2.5l 4cyl single point injection as a fixer upper and am having a hell of a time starting the thing... I have between 20-30 psi in the fuel line, replaced all the gaskets and o-rings in the throttle body, and am wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to check if the injector is clogged or how you can clean one?  i am not sure this is probably a easy fix but i am having a hell of a time finding a new injector for it...

oh ya, when the injector is in place next to no gas comes through but if i remove it gas is just pouring into the engine... and it would start if i poured gas directly into the throttle body, but as soon as that gas is gone it stalls out... but now i have also lost my fuel pump and spark in the plugs... not sure what is going on but i defiantly need some advice on what to do...

your "single point fuel injection" is commonly called tbi (throttle body injection). did the jeep run when you bought it/ do you know what happened when it stopped working?

as for getting a new injector you can get them from here: http://www.injectors4u.com/tbi_injectors.htm. or im pretty sure most auto parts stores can get them / i could find them online at orielly.com but they are 3times as expensive... i would check you sensors and vacuum lines before buying a new injector as the computer could just be confused and not giving enough fuel to the motor.

that's all i have for advice but others should join in soon. (probably with better answers also)

up till yesterday the jeep ran when gas was poured into the throttle body, but stalled out shortly after... thanks for the link, cheapest injector i could find was over $150, i can live with $35 a little more...

have you tried using seafoam in the fuel to try and clean the injectors? i would say that the fuel filter may have gone bad causing the shortage of fuel but the pressure is right. but it may be possible to have correct pressure but to low of a volume allowed through the filter.

for the no spark or fuel pump i would check your battery cables (both ends) with the high amount of cranking compared to running it sounds like its got lately it way have exposed a problem. ( i had that happen when i fried my radio a while back and was left with no electronics working)

i got back the spark and fuel now, have the pulse on the injector and still no fuel coming thru... ordering a new injector shortly and hope that will fix the problem...

the "wot" switch is on the back side (towards firewall) of the throttle body...  the ecu is under the dash on the passenger side(i think) but i can't remember if it can be seen with the dash together or not ( its been a while since i was under mine)

here is a link to a parts catalog for 88-90 jeeps. it has some useful diagrams and exploded views. but it takes a while to load.
