How difficult is it to rebuild my 30RH?
« on: September 26, 2008, 01:53:02 PM »
My auto trans has been slipping for a while and I think it's time for a rebuild. I was looking at a few rebuild articles and it doesn't look too difficult. Does anyone have any experience with this? On a scale of 1-10, what would you rate it difficulty wise. I've rebuilt engines before and had no troubles. What's it like compared to an engine rebuild?

The biggest challenge is to keep the valvebody parts in their correct order other than that its cake

I'll get a rebuild manual and take photos of everything as I take it apart. Especially the valve body. This way I will have a record of where everything was before I dismantled it. I was reading this and it doesn't look too complicated.

What works well is fold thin cardboard into something that looks like a bellows so you can keep all the springs and parts in order and sequence before you get to carried away the old torqueflite ie 999 or 727 trans perks up quite a bit when you adjust the bands properly

Thanks for the advice. I got the band adjustment procedure from the FSM yesterday. I'll flush the trans once or twice, replace the filter and adjust the front and rear bands. If I don't accomplish anything that way then I'll start the rebuild.

An ATSG manual is your friend.  The Torque-Flite variant transmissions are some of the simplest transmissions to rebuild.

Thanks, oldjeep. I was looking at the manual you suggested. I'll be ordering one withing the next week or so. I'm going to flush the trans 2 times and adjust the front and rear bands over the coming weekend. I think I'll replace the filter while I'm at it. I'm thankful for installing the Skyjacker oversize trans pan with the drain plug in it. Otherwise this would be a much bigger p.i.t.a.
