Major Vibration/shaking of whole vehicle. Please Help
« on: November 05, 2008, 10:46:55 AM »
I just bought a 2000 TJ 2.5L, it is totally stock. I love it, but on rare occasions when I hit a sharp bump in the road, my whole car starts oscillating.
Its almost like my suspension has hit its natural frequency and it is trying to shake apart. The only way to stop it is to step on the brake and slow way down. Do you think I need new shocks? Or something in my suspension is broken and I cannot see it by my naked eye. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This problem is driving me crazy.
Thanks ahead of time. :'(

hmmm...a little death wobble...on a stock vehicle???

Here is a picture of your steering.  You should make sure all of the bolts are tight, but in particular, tighten the bejeezus out of the track bar bolt...left side.

start there and see if it is loose...tighten and see if that fixes your problem.  Make sure tires are balanced...alignment....

Search 'Death Wobble' on google or any jeep forum and you will find a wealth of information.

My experience has most often shown loose or worn track bars, and worn out control arm bushings.

For the trackbar, watch both ends as an assistant turns the steering wheel back and forth against full lock quickly.

For the control arm bushings, inspect with a flashlight and a screwdriver.  Look for tears in the rubber.

 I know its been awhile, but I just wanted to thank everyone for their inputs. I checked all of the suspension joints  as listed and everything felt tight and looked ok. I changed the Steering stabilizer to a Rancho 5000 and that did the trick. The steering definitely feels alot firmer. I am glad that is all that is was.
