Just to give you an idea how much abuse a HP D30 can take, go to "YouTube - Breaking Trail:4x4 Union" and watch the vid. of my buddies 350TBI powered S10 with a stock HP D30 out of an XJ & a 8.8 LS out of an Explorer (3.73s) on 33" BFG MTs . D30s been in there for 5 yrs now, an gets abused regularly. Been waiting for it to break so we can replace it with a D44, but it just keeps hanging in there.
