Loose torque converter bolts?
« on: January 02, 2009, 07:27:51 PM »
Lately I have been hearing some knocking noises coming from my trany that quieten when I put her in gear.  I took it to a mechanic and he said my torque converter bolts were loose  ???  Has anyone had this happen?  He said it might be an easy fix if I have a dust cover to get to it with....Do 3 spd ATs have this?

yea they do if i remember correctly , get under your jeep and look for a shield in the front of the trans, and pop that out, you may need to take the starter out b/c it acts as a shim as well.  you might be able to do all the work from the starter hole itself,  pop the screws out loc-tite em and tighten em back up..  as for it happening to me never, nd i beat the shit outta my jeep but anything is possible and ive learned that.

p.s.  those starter bolt ond the autos suck dont strip the heads

I've heard of the flex plate cracking and making noises... and as mentioned above don't mess up the starter bolts.. they suck. (inverse torques)

Thanks guys, It was the torque converter bolts loose.  All of them.  Thankfully, it was caught before the flex plate was damaged  Only cost $40.

Seen this twice on other's rigs, both thought it was a motor knock.

If it has the funny tunk tunk sound it does, not all that unncommon.
You want to check that like now. When it stays loose for awhile it will beat out/slot the holes in the flex plate and then you might as well change that also and that is a whole lot more work

Happens a lot with AW4's - loose bolts.  Which then leads to the flexplate cracking.
