Anyone tried this lift?
« on: February 26, 2009, 10:04:54 PM »
Hey guys, I think I narrowed it down to the lift I want.  I think I'm going to go with the 2.5in. coil spring lift from RC.  It's a little more than the BB but for the price you get coils also.  My coils are worn after 150,000 miles so I think this is the best choice.  Has anyone ran it on here or heard anything about it. I read about 40 pages worth on Jeepforum.com and about 90% of the people there really like it.  Any comments?

Sounds good. You may be the first on this forum to state you are going that way or have them for the TJ.

My springs were worn pretty good as well. I swapped in a set of LJ Rubi's and I really needed those. I also added the 2" spacers to gain more lift. At the same time, I swapped in adjustable upper rear control arm and the front lower to be able to gain the most from the slight lift as well as lift shocks.
You may run into some vibes with the rear driveline angle. By using adj upper arms in the rear, you can easily adjust the pinion for a better angle and less vibes. Choosing the right arms is still another personal choice and you'll probably have to go through the same typical research you did for the springs.
I would suggest, that over time, look for replacing your track bars with adjustables first, then the lower rear control arms and upper front control arms. Or you can look for a set of new or used bars and arms that come as a kit.

Don't forget to take the before and after lift shots before the bigger tires go on. Take a measurement from the same location to give an idea of what the lift gives. Then measure that once again in a couple of months to determine the 'settle' of the coils.

Sounds great jag. Thanks for the advice!  The other question I had is this. Over on the other Jeep forum some guys were having trouble with their rear or front axles shifting one way or the other.  It was very minimal, such as some having none, some having 1/8 inch to 1 side, and some with none. My question would be will this affect the way the Jeep drives/handles or anything else or is it just a cosmetic issue?  The kit also comes with TC drop kit. Some have used it, some havent because they didnt get any weird vibs. I'm going to try it without the drop first then see what happens.
Thanks. Jeff

Its a great kit. I have one on my 04 tj and I am going to put one on my 97. Dont worry about axle shift if you have aftermarket rims with offset. The only time you notice it is with stock rims and even then its minimal. But it if it bothers you allot like it did me than theres an easy fix for $17.99

Thanks murphy, thats what I saw on Jeepforum.com too.  I don't post there though, only here

Anyway, if I run these new rims/tires I got, you are saying I should be fine?  The rims are 17's off a 09 wrangler.  With 255/75/17 BFG M/T's.  Also going to have to run a spacer because the rims bolt pattern is diffrent.
Thanks, Jeff

That is the effect of the track bar when adding height between the axle and frame. Since the front track bar is attached to the driver's side frame rail and at the axle on the passenger side, when you lift the frame from the axle, the axle will be pulled to the driver's side. Opposite happens in the rear, again due to the track bar frame mount on the passenger side frame and axle location on driver's side. Same happens with the control arms. Lift brings the axles underneath the Jeep. Though the small lift it is, there is still an effect and you should notice it.

For the rear, yah, the bracket is a quick, easy and doable fix. However, is it high enough with the given lift height? Probably and that is all that is needed. Probably not, but its better than leaving it as stock configured. (I had one when I added my poly lift. I removed it when I added the 8.8 and welded on new brackets.)
For the front, the recommendation is to drill a hole 3/4" over to the driver's side in the axle bracket. You may still be able to use the stock tang/nut as well. But it does get really tight in there. Or look for adjustable track bars for both or just one axle. They are that really expensive ($150 range) new and will last greater than the already-worn-stock ones now with a lift.

When you put the springs in, you may have to disconnect the front track bar. Easy to do and it's just as easy to reconnect. Since the frame is attached to the axle through the steering, you can realign the track bar into the bracket by barely moving the steering wheel. You will see that the axle will sit on the ground and the frame will float over top of it. That is the locationg function of the track bar to keep the axle under the frame.

as some of you know, i installed this lift back in november. it works great. wasnt a pain to put in or anything. for the price, ya cant beat it.  On the main forum page i have a thread with a video from rough country about this lift.

Ride: pretty good-doesnt feel too different from stock-i would say the progressive coils do exactly what they claim-the closer spaced coils at the top absorb on road bumps and cracks, while the larger ones towards the middle to bottom absorb the offroad bumps etc.

offroad: ive been out 3 times since i got the lift and i truly love it. if i had some more $$ for 32s id of gone with a bigger lift but this one really works well. 2.5"s and 31s will get u through most trails anyway-go bigger if ya wanna rock crawl.

Note: the kit comes with a t-case drop kit- i DID NOT lower mine as it didnt tremble or vibrate when i drove it off after installing the lift. id play it by ear-if ur rig vibrates after the install, lower the t-case, if not u prob can drive on it..ive been drivin on it as is and have wheeled it and i havent had a problem. though it wont shift (sometimes) into 4hi if im on an incline-i am not sure if this is at all related to not lowering the t-case...it still engages 4hi if i do it in neutral.

i have pics posted on the offroad pics page of the forum of me using the lift. the flex as u will see is pretty decent.
its just been through a CT winter full of salt and sand-when the weather finally clears up ill be able to give it a nice thorough check to see how well the lift components have held up to the salt and sand.

this is a video of my jeep with the lift so u can see what it looks like sittin on 31s

any questions just ask or PM me.
PS..i got mine on Ebay, i can prob get ya the info from where i got it
