Lemme get a HELL YEAH!
« on: April 27, 2009, 08:32:28 PM »
I'm gettin' a Teralow 4:1 kit for my Heep!  :blbl:  :hump:  :weee:

And technically, it's not costing me anything... Other than blood, sweat and tears that is. A buddy of mine called me this evening and told me that he came across this and wanted to know if I was interested in working it off. And of course, I am  :weee:

Gonna head down to his shop in a little bit to slap a clutch in a little 2WD Ranger, I'll try to remember to snap a pic of the kit to post up

Yay, I'm excited. I'm gettin' my transmission rebuilt and a 4:1 for my T-case!

You lucky duck, you'll love it for rock crawling for anything else its a bit of a pain frequent shifting from low to high range. But for rocks it works like a charm

Make sure the welds that holds the planetaries together are in good shape. I guy I run with just fragged his Tera 4:1. lst week. In the club I run with this is about the 5th one that has fragged. Everyone of them had failures in the spot welds. This is over the last 3-4 years.

Nice find. You will like the lower gearing. Just so you know they are kinda noisy. Don't be surprised when you get it together and hear the gears whining.

I don't hit up rocks a whole lot, but I will definitely enjoy the low speed crawling. I prefer it over beating the hell out of my rig to get through obstacles anyway  :hump:

I'll definitely check out the gears when I see it (kit wasn't down there tonight), the kit is brand new so I wonder if it's a problem more with the older ones?

Also scored a new clutch too! Well, it's got 5K on it, but I don't care! That's waaaay less than the clutch in my rig right now and the one out of my old drivetrain.

It rocks knowing the right people   :weee:

And FWIW, I hope that if any of you ever have to replace a clutch in a newer model 4 cyl Ford Ranger, that you've got small hands. I'm a small dude myself and have small hands, and it was still a PITA trying to get some of the transmission bolts out. Not looking forward to putting them back in tomorrow  :stick:

I got a 4:1 and it a great addition for sure.  The 4:1'S that I've seen blow have all been in 6 cylinders and HIGH rpms were the cause.

Is it a 21 or 23 spline input?

For the ranger clut ch very long extension say like 3 feet long with a good universal socket and a 1/2 impact should make the top bolts cake. I bet you'kk love the terra low, I hope it has the right spline count though
4 cyl ax 5 21 spline if it came out of a 6 cyl you need to do some modding or stick in an ax15

It's for a 21 spline  :weee: He said it's for an "early 6 cyl Auto", didn't know the early ones came with a 21 spline input shaft.  Or the 4 cyl. And I obviously gots the 4 Banger  :smokes:

I ended up using a swivel attached to the socket and a fairly long extension, but even then a couple of the bolts were a PITA and I had to break them loose with the rachet and then use ratcheting wrenches to get them the rest the way out...

My dad just picked up a 94 Ranger 2.3 5 SP for $500 and it's got 244K on it, supposedly on the original clutch (I doubt that though), I get to do the clutch in that fairly soon too, YAY! At least I'll be doing it at my buddy's shop, tranny jacks and lifts make life sooooooo much easier!

That's usually my problem at home. I'm used to working on the ground so I can usually deal with that, but not having the right tools sucks. I try and wait to do everything I need to do minus small maintenance at his shop. He's got everything I'll ever need down there! Even beer and magaritas!
