It can get pretty tight on a TJ especially when you try to push the axle back.
For U joint protection use a Ninth degree. AEV diff slider just make sure it doesn't gouge the drive shaft. With enough lift it stops being a problem because the pinion gets turned up quite a way with a cv shaft. I have scraped my front straps which has since been solved with a high pinion axle the rear has never been scratched even though it has belly flopped on rocks quite a few times

so which of the cover offers the most clearance. the sites talk bout thickness of cover and ring section. but not how far out it hangs. i know ruff stuff is one of the bigger ones

Just built one out of 3/16 steel plate it's not all that hard and when it overla[s the edge of the diff cover you can pretty much stick with the stock one since it will protect it from peeling open on rocks.

Mine is on a dana44 but you get the idea

You can combine it with the ring that JJ has over his diff cover make the front longer to protect the pinion Yoke and you are golden
