Need to source connecting rod nuts
« on: October 08, 2009, 07:26:49 PM »
Connecting rod nut for the '00 2.5L has been on national back order since April, at least, with no eta.

Can someone suggest a source for new nuts, p/n J4006385, nut, hex flanged, .3427-24?

Thanks in advance...

junkyard i would guess would be the obvious choice. What is it used for? and also, .3427? closest fraction is 11/32=0.3438

A connecting rod nut is used to attach the lower half of the connecting rod to the upper part.  (see title of thread but you knew that  ;)  )

I don't re-use connecting rod nuts so that's why I'm looking for new ones.

I understand that it's close to an 11/32 but it's metric. Not interested in attempting a mix.

that's what got me confused since it is not a standard SAE dimension but you said it's a -24 which suggested otherwise, anyway good luck

EDIT: so I'm guessing now that you're actually looking for M9x1.00 (9mm diameter and 1mm thread step) which is very hard to find. btw, i wasn't suggesting you use 11/32 i was asking what dimension is that since won't come up to any known fraction.

the size you have listed is incorrect, p/n j4006385, nut, hex, flanged, .3437-24  ...which i beleive is 11/32

Is this a low power rebuild, or are you running boost?
I would take the conn rods to a machine shop and have them set up for bolts instead of nuts http://www.arp-bolts.com/.
That's what I did on my last engine build.

I'll look into it - thanks.

The specs I listed above are copied directly (copy/paste) from the 2000 TJ IPC.

Relatively low power build - cam, up-sized tb, banks header, hi-flow xhaust. That's about all.

if it's the first time they were taken off you can reuse them - i know the FSM or rebuild manuals say to use new every time but it is ok (i reused these for higher output engines and never had a prob), other guys here can confirm that i think. All this given that they are visually ok. Just make sure to torque them to specs. But if you want to go by the book that would mean new ones.

we have reused the nuts for the connecting rods on our willys motors multiple times.. aslong as they aren't obviously damaged they are good to go for most cases
1990 YJ 4cly, ax5, 2.5 inch BDS lift, 31 MTr\'s,  Powertrax-lockers all around, track-bars removed, boomerang shackles, warn m8000 winch, electric fan. [sold but not forgotten]

Well, I gotta tell ya, I've never re-used them before but I've only build airplane motors and it's the law.

You guys have gotten me to thinking, however. I do appreciate the input.

This Jeep is my dd and will be getting mostly highway miles - you both still feel like the originals would be okay? None are damaged.

i rebuilt bmw, audi, fiat and renault engines and always reused the nuts (long time ago though) - the only time i changed them was when they were deformed or known to be at the second rebuild - i can guarantee that if they were factory torqued they are ok to reuse but make sure you inspect them and there are no deformations. Not sure about modifying the rods to use bolts,  can't speak for that, but one thing to keep in mind is that the bolts are used to center the cap and they are machined with the cap tighten to create a perfect circle (although some of them have an insert in the upper part used for centering, not sure how yours are) - the machine shop that would reconfigure for using bolts has to insure that it keeps everything perfectly aligned or you will have trouble - out of the 2 i would go with reusing the nuts (i'm not saying it's not ok but it depends on how experienced is the machine shop on doing this mod).

dont care where you copy/pasted the typo from its still incorrect, dont beleive me go spend a nickel on a 11/32-24 bolt and spin an old nut on there.
just trying to help ya out....you will never find a .3427-24 nut or a metric one with 24 threads per inch.

If you call ARP's customer service line, You might find they carry them...
Or call Dorman Fasteners, Wicks Aircraft or Aircraft Spruce and specialty.

Just a thought..
