dana 300 for 100 bucks good deal
« on: November 15, 2009, 06:26:12 PM »
I've got aline on a dana 300 for $100
It came out of a 83' cj7 that had a 4cylinder and borgwarner trans.
I'm thinking i could use this for a doubler build does anyone know what the input spline count is?
I think i need 23 spline for the doubler kit.
Is there any difference in the dana 300's that where behind a 4cyl or a v8?
I'm told everything is in working order do this sound like a good deal for a doubler?

$100 is a good deal these days.  Spline count is the same on all D300's - 23 spline

Yah, D300 are all 23 splines. The late model years will have a longer output but it is nothing much. For use as a doubler, it is a good plan. Choose your doubler case to match your tranny output and the input to the D300. If you have a 5-sp trans, you will have a 21-spline output. But if you use that case as the doubler case, the stub shaft between it and the D300 should be the same as a 23-spline NP231.

You will have to flip the D300 as well. So you may have to rebuild with new gaskets, relocate your breather, reconfigure your shifters, add a cv style yoke to the output, and get a speedo convert kit to work with your TJ. It is all good. I've got a D&D Machine kit in the garage that requires some assembly and a D300 as well that needs the rebuild.

pretty much what he ^ said
D300 rebuild kits go for about $170 and include the seals, gaskets and shims. Mine needed all those, but for a total of about $300 you end up with a really strong t-case. You still need a new driveshaft for rear (cv style) + yoke and shortened front d/shaft (if you don't use a doubler, and i would think a longer one if you do) as well as a flip kit or a shifter flip kit (DD machine used to make a kit for that, have not seen it on his ebay store but you could send him an email and see if he still has them), or you can come up with your own (i used an advance adapters twin stick kit for that - check the members projects section on my drivetrain upgrade thread) but i would think you can use any twin stick kit and fab some mount for it.
One thing to keep in mind is that if you flip it most likely you will need new shifter rails - the ones that were on the 300 i got were rusted on the portion sticking out of the t-case so they would've leaked for sure being on the bottom when flipped - the AA kit came with shifter rails so that made it worthwhile for me.

EDIT: for the speedo i used the one that was on my 231 and it worked just fine ('95 YJ, D300 was out of an '81 CJ), not sure what the TJs have but i think they should be the same so you might be able to just swap yours on or use a 91-95 YJ sender (unless there's some incompatibility with the pulse count / mile)

I built a 231/231 doubler but didn't use it.  I didn't like the driveshaft length that I wound up with, even though I moved my whole drivetrain forward 7".

Thanks for the insight everyone.
should be pickup my dana 300 tomorrow!
Now for my next questions.

My current 231 has a teralow that i'm thinking of cutting it up to use as the front case in my doubler,
good or bad idea? (it was a blemished version so i'm only destroying a $700 part)

shift linkage, have been thinking about north west fabs cable shifters even though i have had problems
in the past cable shifters on an ox locker, but idont know any cleaner way to put shifters in.

I have read a little about flipping the case but could use a little more info
( shifter sealing, vent delete and where to put the new vent)

thanks for the help

I have seen a fair amount of Tera's 231 4:1 kits go BOOM! I think I'd sell it and use that money for a 4:1 for the D300.

THANKS for all the insight

Picked up my dana300 everything looks good, except that there are a couple of teeth chipped on the gears that the shifting coupler slides on
I dont feel its a big deal though.

Sharpxmen ur shifters turned out really nice but i got a few questions:

Would those shifters work with a dd machine doubler which would move the shifters back about 8inches (thinking the shifters would be into the    seat frame, not worried about the center consol or other crap)

The new shift rails that come AA kit, are they already setup to give you front wheel only low?

So dose the spline count on the inside of the plantary count differ on jeep np231 that behined a 4.0l or 2.5?
Thinking with a ddmachine doubler kit that comes with a 23 spline shaft which is the count on the end that would go into the dana300 but what about the count on the end that goes into the np231?

thanks for the help

i would think you can make longer connect brackets (like i did for the front one) but that is if it clears the doubler (i would guess you can clock it on the other side, but i'm not sure though). I would just leave them thru the stock hole in the floor and not cut another one - you could use a cable shifter for the doubler box and you can position the shifter wherever you want - when i was thinking of getting a doubler i wanted to have a cable shifter with one of those military truck handles that mount under the dash so i don't need to worry about an extra hole in the floor.

nope, i did that - i have some pics somewhere, i'll find them and let you know when i have them posted

i would think they're the same but i have no idea - you should email DD machine, i'm sure he's got all sorts of shaft adapters, he's been doing this for quite some time now and most likely there were others with the same setup like yours.

just occured to me that the sye kit is the same for both 4.0 and 2.5 so that would lead me to believe that the planetary splines are the same.
