Can't wait heh
« on: December 03, 2009, 06:14:53 PM »
Well I'm finally getting around to installing the D44 I've had for the jeep awhile now. I already got my gears installed, went with 4:88s. Who all is running 4:88s on here? How much of a difference did you notice going from 4:10s to 4:88s? I'm ready to get this thing under the jeep and take it for a drive to see how she handles!

It depends, what tires are you running?

Congrats...you will love the gears and they will allow you to put on 33" tires...and greater. All it did was restore my 5th gear so on flat land it cruises pretty good, while dropping the RPM's. Still has trouble going uphill on the Freeway. Enjoy!

4.88's work like a charm for 33's or 35's for the latter you might want to buy some chromemoly axle shafts if you go out and play a lot

I'm running stock axles with 4.88s was perfect match for my 33's.  but personally if I could have got bigger I would have just for even lower off road running.

The 4.88 will make a lot of difference.  Just remember that you are driving something that has the aerodynamics of a brick.  On flat ground with little wind it'll cruise 70 running on 33's at about 3000rpm in 5th.  When you hit a hill or are fighting a head wind you'll be back in 4th gear.  Off road in 4hi mine crawls along the service trails at the lake I go to at idle without your foot on the pedals.  All in all it was probably the best upgrade I've done so far.

My jeep is already running 33s, it has a set of mickey thompson MTZs.

Well I'm pretty happy with how it drives. I'm curious to get it out on the trail and see how it handles.

Do you still have a Dana 30 up front?

Next step is to figure out what brand of 33's tires you're gonna put on it...

I have bfg's mud-terrain's Km2's there great and don't make to much noise on the highway like some tires.  Also ran the previous tread design the KM's found them to be a little bit better in the mud alone but the Km2's are better as all around tire. the block pattern is slightly smaller with a few extra cuts in the blocks vs the bfg Crawler's.

really it' depends how much dd you do. if you don't daily drive you could go with a really crazy tire like swamper boggers etc...

Ya I think my next set of tires is going to be a swamper of some type in the 35" favor...
