I aquired this today. Worked when last used. Has sat for a while. Does anyone have any experience with this winch. Does anyone have a link for possible rebuild info and or what to check what should I do before I attempt to operate etc etc..any and all ideas and advice welcome. Thanks

Good score, looks a lot like mine when I got it.  Get it cheap?

They're easy to work on, just tear into it.  I'd first pull the motor, make sure the armature spins freely by hand.  Then pull the top cover off the gears & check the condition of the freespool gear and other gears.  I was lucky and my '75 model showed no wear.

There are some rebuild writeups online, I will look for them when I'm on a 'puter and not my phone.

They're pretty simple to rebuild, I've done a couple of them.  If you take it apart, you'll probabally have to replace the seals in the bottom end otherwise you'll be leaking gear oil.

Check that the brake move freely, they like to seize up if they are left sitting too long.  Hopefully it's new enough to have the disc type friction pads rather than the multiple round pucks.  The puck type in't available and you have to buy a kit that replaces the ratchet gear and friction pads.

The idea of 2 motors on that winch just scares the hell out of me.  The winch was almost too fast sometime, a low gear would have been nice ;)

It's definitely a fast winch and you have to always be on your toes, with both the line speed and the run-on.

yea I heard out the run ons even in the manual I found online. Has anyone run 3/8 cable rather than the recommended 5/16? I came across a deal on new 100ft of 3/8 even tho it hols 150ft of 5/16. I was thinking of making an extension of another cable in decent shape for those situations when not too close to a pulling point

I've always run 3/8" steel cable on my 8274's and my Bellview.  You can fit 110 feet of 3/8 on an 8274.

You do need to be more watchfull when winding cable on and off the winch though.  3/8 will bird nest a lot easier due to it's stuiffness

Hye old jeep and bounty,

    Did you change out the solenoids? Have you used the ford style? When tested they all clicked. I picked up the 4.6hp prestolite replacement motor and picked up some recommended marine/golfcart continuous solenoids. However the sent me 2 to replace 4. A guy in my jeep club said they wont work and there has to be 4. But theres 5 connections on these other solenoids. Any solenoid advise will be a great help

Mine works fine with the original solenoids.  How much was that replacement motor?

I replaced all teh solonoids on mine.  I switched to the front terminal solonoids that they use in the newer 8274.  Whatever you use needs to be rated for continuous duty.  Starter solonoids will get fried.  If you only use 2 solonoids make sure they are rated high enough.  The 4 solonoid block runs half the power through each solonoid in the pair.

You could extend this idea and build a solenoid pack with 6 or more solenoids for greater redundancy and reliability.  Maybe add an extra one for the spool in at least.
