are these illegal or something - what do you mean by that?

they seem too big though

well they are only sold to professional rock crawlers. they are not street legal. when they get warm they are soo gummy and grip to ANYTHING. my buddy has em on his old comp crawler.

I have MTZ's  they are not all bad, but like anything procomp etc they have thin sidewalls, have cut 2 so far and they do not grip well on fairly slick rock.
If you want tires for rocks you cannot go wrong with a set of Krawlers, the red label sticky ones are the bomb if you can find them

Love the Mickey Thompson Baja MTZs  Great Tires!

That's what I run on my YJ as well.  For a dual purpose tire they work very well in snow, mild muck and rocks.

You don't have to be anyone special to buy Maxxis stickies, just have to be willing to plunk down a lot of $$$$

Several local jeepers run Super Swamper SSR tires with very good results both on and off road.

I'm pretty darn happy with my Toyo MTR's

Great all around tire, I've had them in Mud, slick rock
and on the highway for 1200 mile trips with no issues.
